Well if that story is made up, the guy is a heck of a writer.
His rumors were always pretty accurate. Check out some of these from way back in 1996.

TAKE FLIGHT TO CLOSE IN WALT DISNEY WORLD’S TOMORROWLAND... This Magic Kingdom attraction, formly known as "Delta Dreamflight" is expected to close permanently by Spring 1997. In it’s place, Disney will build a new attraction themed around "Toy Story". Tentatively titled "Buzz Lightyear’s Star Command". The ride will make use of the old "Dreamflight"/"Take Flight" ride track but still take guests to "Infinity and Beyond!"
HORIZONS TO CLOSE AT EPCOT’S FUTURE WORLD....As GM’s "Test Track" attraction comes on line this spring (Tentative soft opening date: April 15, 1997), the old GE pavilion is expected to close for good. Currently, the building is slated to be completely gutted, making way for the long planned "Adventure In Space" pavilion. Though there is no firm date yet for the new attraction that will be housed in the revamped "Horizons" building, Disney Insider suggests that a Spring 1999 opening is likely.
ROCK ‘N ROLLER COASTER TO BE ADDED TO DISNEY-MGM STUDIOS.... Disney-MGM Studios Theme Park will be getting a bold new thrill ride in 1999, when the Rock ‘N Roller coaster rolls into town. This looping steel coaster features the exact track layout and ride vehicles used in Disneyland Paris "Space Mountain: From the Earth to the Moon" ride. It will be built behind the Sunset Ranch Market area off of Sunset Boulevard. Located just 100 yards or so from Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, this new attraction will make the Disney-MGM Studios Theme Park’s north side, Thrill-Central!
