The Progress Essays

“It had this feeling of a freight train leaving the station at lightspeed. You better jump on or jump off fast.” – Don Hahn, Waking Sleeping Beauty.

I’ve come to think of myself as a “Disney Parks Essencist” – In other words, I believe destruction in theme park design is not determined by a lessening popularity level of intellectual property, nor the approach of waiting for the attraction to rot to replace, but rather the understanding the attraction’s “essence” – the purpose and meaning in that attraction’s home park or resort and what it was meant to do when it premiered to guests. This is done knowing not only its financial or overall purpose within a park but its storyline identity.

To me, it’s always a “What is the essence of this attraction that makes it so great? What makes it Disney? What is a “Disney” level attraction? Is it formattable to adapt? Can we progress?

As a sincere Disney Parks fan, I think it is time to look at the playing field on what progress looks like, done right, and with a purpose. The Princess and the Frog vs. Splash debates may have brought a large concurrence to theming in Disneyland’s New Orleans Square, but spared the balance within Critter Country and Frontierland. This brought a new question to fans: When is progress out of control? Is killing history progress? When in Progress good? When is it bad?

Phase 1 of these Progress Essays is rooted in the question of a fans’ apocalyptic nightmare of replacing classic attractions at Disney's Magic Kingdom – though not currently necessary, this poses questions and answers to what it could not only look like, but can it be done correctly, wisely, and keep Disney “essence.” Is the Essence of a Magic Kingdom in It’s a Small World? Or can the carrying of a smile in a different attraction be just enough to label it as having that Disney “essence”

Classics will be taken away. You can’t fight classics with classics. This will be controversial - this will hopefully challenge fans’ beliefs and provide out-of-the-box thinking and ingenuity looking forward... But isn’t all Progress?

The reason for the previous quote above by Don Hahn really defines where Disney parks are at. Disney’s in-between a change in leadership and direction, which boils down to focus and delivery. How do you carry storytelling on you while trying to jump into the train car while it takes off?

So, let’s start with the left side of Magic Kingdom since currently, that’s where most of the belly of the beast theme-wise seems to be for the most part.

The Progress Essays Section I: Adventureland

Adventureland has been mismatched “jack of all themes land” for years at Magic Kingdom. From Africa, Agrabah, and Polynesia to the Caribbean, there needs to be a more streamlined approach to the land’s storyline. That’ll lead to more congruent theming and interpretational direction. So, let’s take a quick tour of the renovations before I post an in-depth walkthrough.

Using a lot of the Swan Boat moat plots, this expansion doubles the walk space to include more immersive worlds and cohesive storylines in Adventureland.

First, you’ll visit the lands of Agrabah, and explore everything from Aladdin’s lookout to Jafar’s Potion keep. Fly high above the sky with a Magic Carpet. Maybe even dine in the Sultan’s Gardens, or for Club 33 members. – Relax and Dine in the Palace itself.

Past the Cave of Wonders, experience the Polynesian High Seas with a new Moana attraction, or the classic Enchanted Tiki Room.

After visiting the south seas, visit the Magical Casita from Encanto and help tell the stories of the family, or experience the new Amazon River Port of the Jungle Cruise.

If your favorite Adventure includes pillage and plunder, you’ll want to visit the newly revised Pirates of the Caribbean attraction, which adds new elements to an old story that will blow Shanghai and Disneyland’s versions out of the water!

I don't get why people like the movie "Encanto".

But I have to admit it would make a great attraction. It would be awesome to see it in trackless ride form. Appearance wise it could be very similar to Mystic Manor in Hong Kong. Where you go through the house seeing different and sometimes odd things.

LOL, please don't go after me Lin Manuel fans.

As long it's a decent attraction I don't care what movie it's based on. They could do a Black Cauldron or Home on the Range one if they want. Some of the bad ones actually would translate better into an attraction, like Atlantis, Brother Bear and Meet the Robinsons.

Whoa, that's better than cool whip! ...... What is it?

It's a swinging pirate ship style fat ride tied to Moana just as described and now illustrated by @TheDesignPirate

You can make out that the flat ride itself is tied to the Kakamora with the ship presumably being theirs. There is plenty of rockwork in the flat ride's area with waterfalls pouring out to give the area natural beauty. A family taking a selfie is to the right, and understanably so given the theming of the flat ride. Looking at the top of the pendulum you can actually see what appears to be sea colored ribbon and rope that the Kakamora are holding onto, perhaps to keep the ride together?

To the right is The Encanted Tiki Room's exit as well as Sunshine Seasons. In the distance you can the entrance of the Tiki Room as well as the iconic tower that is a part of the queue nearest the Liki Tikis/Caribbean area.

Oooooooo, nice. It fits in very well with it's surroundings.

I'd probably wait to have my Dole Whip after this one. Last time I went on a Pirate Ship the brakes broke. Everyone on board had to wait for it to slow down on it's own, which was probably only 10-15 minutes, but it felt like an eternity.

@TheDesignPirate is exceptionally talented when it comes to art! They formally went by the username MonorailRed and has been on these forums for many years.

Here is their blog chronicling their art through the ages if you want to take looksy:

I'm hiring you for all press communications :hilarious:

Where did you get that artwork? Did you do it?

Yep! That's me.
