To a certain extent, Disney's attempts to democratize what it means to be a princess are admirable. You don't actually have to be born into a royal title, or obtain one by marriage. ...

But two restrictions remain. You have to be young. You have to have a very particular body type and long, perfect hair. The edits to Merida reflect those priorities. Her famous hair, which took six Pixar employees—a mix of artists and engineers—three years to design, has been smoothed out, made less kinky, less frizzy, and less alive. Her waist has been slimmed down, emphasizing her , but at the expense of Merida's solid frame, which is a real shame given the way Brave celebrated Merida's pleasure in her body's capacities.

What's happening is Disney Consumer Products is expressing less interest in the true personality and artistic significance of their female characters than in their ability to be reshaped into Barbies and sold as such to girls everywhere. You know, the usual.

You'd think Merida would be immune to this. Cinderella and Snow White I might understand since their movies came out decades ago and therefore might use some "updating" to hairstyles, costumes and such, but Brave just came out. It seems like this would lead to far more confusion to who the "real" Merida was, as the OP described.

Thanks Stuart, I just checked it out & posted. I love Scotland & hope to visit someday, I had planned on my 50th birthday to make the trip but DD was born when I turned 44, so plans have changed, LOL!!!! I was so excited when Brave came out & that my DD fell in love with it. I just hate to see the orignal character change. She is just what I pictured a damsel to be, but I think the men need a little work, LOL!!! They should be changing them instead of Merida!!! IMOP!!!! OF COURSE!!!!
