According to the article posted below The Theater Development Fund and Disney Theatricals will be presenting the first every autism friendly broadway production. For one night only The Lion King on Broadway will be altered slightly to make the show less likely to alarm children and adults who are on the autism spectrum. Loud and sudden noises as well as strobe lights will be changed as well as other portions of the show. The production is working closely with autism specialists to insure the most people can enjoy a beautiful night of theater. Also if for any reason a family must leave during a portion of the show "quite" zones will be in the lobby that will have specialists and comfy seating. The specialists will be on hand to help anyone who needs it through out the show. Unfortunately the show is almost sold out because many schools and groups in the tri-state area were given a first dibs grab at the tickets.
I think this is a great idea and I commend Disney for trying to reach out to this community. I thought I should share this here because I know Disney has a reputation for making sure everyone feels welcome. If you are going to be going to NYC around this day and have someone in your family who you would love to share the experience with I would jump on tickets now. I really think this is going to be a magical night of theater.
For those who are unfamiliar TDF is a group dedicated to ensuring the theater is open to all people no matter the disability. Originally they focused on people with mobility issues, hearing, and/or vision problems. Now they are bridging the gap to make theater accessible to another group of people that never had the opportunity before now.
