Ever since the land clearing began in the back of the park, speculation around Kings Dominion’s 2010 coaster has been occuring on coaster enthusiast message boards across the Web. All of the developments pointed to a new roller coaster, but no one knew exactly what the new coaster would be. The case may have been cracked today. One poster on ThemeParkReview posted photos of a package of washers next to the track and supports in a staging area. He zoomed in on a packing slip and not only confirmed that Intamin was the coaster’s designer, but also discovered ‘Giga Coaster 92-1540′ in the lower left corner.

KD Fansite has posted a picture showing off the top track piece of the new 2010 coaster’s lift hill, which does indeed appear to be very similar to the top of Millennium Force’s lift hill. A video report has also been posted here.

Lots of new coaster pieces are on site at Kings Dominion which can be seen at KD Fansite, as well as some pictures of the new footers on site. I’ve got to admit, this coaster has me very curious, especially the very large red support piece added to the piles this week. Meanwhile a reader has sent in a great shot from the Anaconda lift hill for us to use as well.

It’s just a bit of speculation from a reader, but I think they could be on to something here. What if this new coaster is more like Fahrenheit (Hersheypark), and will feature a vertical lift hill? Certainly the small er compact area they’ve cleared so far does make more sense for something that could have a vertical lift hill. The odd fact that the lift track pieces also seem to be lacking more traditional support connections may also be a major factor.
Of course would they build a vertical lift coaster with a cable lift drive instead of a chain lift? Dunno... as Fahrenheit featured not just one two two side by side lift-chains to get the job done and the track here simply does not have room for that kind of dual lift system. Me... I still need more information, as this is quite the interesting looking coaster so far.

New Coaster - Under Construction - (7/27/09) According to a post on the Kings Dominion Facebook page, we should look for the big announcement about the 2010 project to take place on August 20th at 11am.
