The "I want to see snow fall" vacation destination thread

What's up everyone? I'm born and raised in the suburbs of New Orleans. We've only had light snow twice that I can remember, the most recent was actually on christmas morning about 5 years ago which was pretty cool. I've only seen snow one other time and it was during the summer 15 yrs ago when I was pretty high up in the mountains in Utah/Colorado and it was still on the ground, not falling.

With that said, I want to see heavy snow fall! So where should I go lol? What part of the country has a good snow season in December that's also a decent size tourists spot? Naturally Tennessee (Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg) comes to my mind first because of its proximity to me but idk when it starts snowing there. I know Colorado doesn't get good snow til Feburary'ish, at least that's what I've been told. What about Lake Tahoe, Ca? Also, I'm not too worried about skiing but I'll stay at a ski resort, I just want real cabins or a real lodge with real snow falling.

Now I don't mind going early next year but I like to take trips in December. I can always take a short trip to WDW in Dec to hold me over if needed lol.

I don't know who told you that Colorado doesn't get good snow until February, but I wonder if they've ever been there. The big ski cities get just as many inches on average in December as they do in January and February. The ski is probably better later in the season after more accumulation, but as you said, you're not worried about skiing.

I live in Montana. Want to home exchange for Christmas? I might not want to switch back, though. :p

My dad has lived in Utah/North New Mexico for the last 15yrs or so. He told me Ski season was better in Jan-March then Nov-Dec so I just assumed that meant more snow fall, that's all lol.

Always wanted to visit Montana but I don't think you want to deal with my 5 dogs for an extended period of time lol.

Lived in Boston for 25 years and in it's suburbs for another 5. During winter storms, snow is only nice within the first 48 hours. After that, it becomes dirty slush and the inevitable layer of non-melting ice. So if you can get to a field of fresh snow, enjoy it for a day or two. Then you start cursing at it like a maniac.

I only want 6-10 days of it and then I'll be happy and content lol. It's 97* today with a "feels like" of 104*, it's pretty darn hot here in New Orleans and while I'm use to it im sure it'll be nice to get away and in some real snow. That's the joy of vacations though, I won't have to shovel any of it and I'll stay at a resort of some kind so chances of me driving will be slim also lol.

The grass is always greener, isn't it? As a California girl living in Montana, I would gladly take the summers that begin in early March and last through Thanksgiving. I wasn't built for bitter cold, haha.

I used to think that I wanted to live in Tahoe. Now I think it would be best to live in Tahoe but spend winters in Mexico.

I've lived in New England for my whole life. As mentioned above, snow is actually pretty nice and beautiful for the first day or two. Then, it turns into gross slush that makes the side of every road and sidewalk look like someone through gray paint at it.

But for someone who's had little experience with snow, I think seeing snow for the first time would be a great experience.

As to where to visit, I'm not really sure. New England gets snow, but we really don't get tons of it until January and February.

How about Niagara Falls? I've been there in the Summer and it is pretty impressive. I imagine it would be a pretty neat place to see in the Winter months.

Yes, I know that many people are fascinated with snow. Myself, I've made my position pretty clear. After spending 63 years up to my armpits in it... I find nothing nice about it at all. Now if it would snow like it did in WDW when the temperature was nearly 80 degrees, I might be able to tolerate it a bit better, but, alas, it doesn't.
