The Future of the MCU

Due to the nature of Infinity War, this thread is probably going to have a lot of spoilers, so read at own risk.

The structure of series has mostly been “a grouping of solo films, ended with an Avengers film” (though Ant-Man ended Phase 2 after Age of Ultron). Feige has said that phases might be on the way out after Phase 3. So where does that leave us after Avengers 4?
Summer 2019: Spider-Man 2 (or whatever they’ll call it)
2020: GotG3 (with Dave Bautista recently confirmed to return as Drax)
... and that’s all we know

My guess is that 2020 will also have Doctor Strange 2, plus either Black Panther 2, Black Widow, or a new character’s first film.

2021 could be the first time the Fox owner characters (X-Men and Fantastic 4) show up. I don’t see it happening any sooner, as Dark Phoenix and New Mutants we’re both pushed to 2019. I’m sure Deadpool 3 or X-Force will happen in 2020 before Disney reboots the X-Men series. Personally, I’d rather see Disney try the F4 reboot first, then an X-Men film in 2022.

If everything goes to plan and Disney gets the fox properties, I agree that the fantastic 4 is where you start. Or you start with something that will lead you into F4. I'm really almost as interested in what direction they go after avengers 4 as what happens in it.

I have a lot of confidence that Disney is going to be the company that makes F4 work. The tech is better now, and I'm sure there are a lot of actors who want their shot at a Marvel film (Screen Rant has a dream cast here, and wow I would love to see Alan Tudyk as Ben Grimm). There are loads and loads of characters who would need to be cast for any X-Men films, but with F4, you really would only need to worry about getting 5 actors.

For non-Fox films (and not including Spider-Man sequels or GotG3), I think the following will be happening sooner rather than later (repeating myself a bit from the first post)
  • Doctor Strange sequel
    • Stephen Strange had some of the best character development in Infinity War, and while at first I wasn't sure if he deserved a sequel, Cumberbatch's performances in Ragnarok and IW are proof that Doctor Strange 2 needs to happen
      • It should also happen at the earliest in 2020, since the first outing was in fall 2016
  • Black Widow
    • I'll be happy if this is the only non-sequel we get in 2020 (though the fact that we haven't heard anything means that it will probably be 2021 before we get it). True it might technically be a sequel to what we've seen of Natasha in the 7 films leading up to it, but I don't care. I just want this movie to be made.
  • Ant-Man & the Wasp sequel
    • Now that the Wasp is in the title, I don't see her going away
  • Black Panther sequel
    • Probably a 2021 release?
  • Captain Marvel sequel
  • Thor 4.
    • Maybe. If Thor survives Avengers 4, I think Taika Waititi is pretty onboard to direct another Thor film.

Personally, with Captain Marvel in house now, and the potential to add Fantastic 4 you almost have to look at a Skrull/Kree type program for marvel characters - you can easily tie in Avengers(in whatever capacity they remain post 4) as well, and then add in Nova as well.

I am pretty sure they have committed to a Panther 2, and Strange 2, as well as Black Widow movie.

What I am curious about- is what happens with Cap. by all reports his contract is up post Avengers 4, do they move on with Falcon or Bucky and do they do a storyline of individual movies with those changes...

The 9 movie deal that Seb Stan apparently has makes me want to think Bucky’s the next Cap, but I suppose that it could be a fake out and Falcon gets the title while Bucky continues to be the MCU’s White Wolf. I’m not sure if the BP cameo counts as one of his movies (like how Thor: The Dark World and Spider-Man:Homecoming don’t count for Chris Evans), and the Ant-Man role was really just footage from Civil War, but this is where we’ve seen Bucky so far:
  1. Captain America: The First Avenger
  2. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
  3. Ant-Man (scene was a clip from Civil War)
  4. Captain America: Civil War
  5. Black Panther (cameo)
  6. Avengers: Infinity War
If you include Avengers 4 in the list, that’s 7 movies, but only 5 count (probably).

Anthony Mackie has joked about having a 50-movie contract, but we don’t know the real details there. My guess is that it was a 6 movie deal.
  1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
  2. Avengers: Age of Ultron
  3. Ant-Man
  4. Captain America: Civil War
  5. Avengers: Infinity War
Contracts can be renegotiated and extended, so even if it’s only a 6 movie deal, I can’t imagine Sam Wilson not popping up from time to time to help out the team.

I was looking around on Box Office Mojo, and I found the release schedule of the next several Marvel films.

While all are essentially 'unknown', I think the May 2020 film was supposed to be Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. With the firing of James Gunn, I wouldn't be surprised if another film in production got bumped up to that spot. What could fill it? That's where things get a little tricky, since we only know of sequels for Black Panther and Doctor Strange, and I don't think Disney/Marvel wants to wait any longer than 4 years between sequels (for the record, Thor has the longest break between title films, with 4 years- minus 4 days- between them).

If Guardians is pushed back by 2-6 months, then this is my guess for 2020:
  • May- Black Panther 2
  • July- GotG3/Doctor Strange 2
  • November- Doctor Strange 2/ GotG3
2021
  • February- Black Widow
  • May- Spider-Man 3
  • November- Ant-Man & the Wasp 2/3
2022
  • February- honestly, I've got no idea. Surprise me, Marvel
  • May- Eternals
  • July- Captain Marvel 2

May 2022 would mark the typical 3 year gap of Avengers films between Avengers 4 and presumably Avengers 5. Other than that some good guesses!

Only thing is that we don’t know if there will be another Avengers film after 4. I certainly hope so, but it would almost have to focus on the new Avengers, with one of the surviving original members making either a cameo or being a supporting character.

Young Avengers however...definitely a maybe.
