The Future of Star Wars: Disney Makes Post-Saga Plans

Famously envisioned by George Lucas to span nine saga chapters, the Star Wars saga will reach what was once envisioned as the penultimate chapter later this year with Rian Johnson‘s The Last Jedi. Star Wars fans need not fret, however, as Disney CEO Bob Iger announced during a presentation at USC that the future of Star Wars is currently being planned with an eye towards the next 15 years.

“We’re starting talk about what could happen after Episode IX,” said Iger (via The Hollywood Reporter), “About what could be another decade-and-a-half of Star Wars stories.”

When Iger says “Star Wars stories,” it’s a little unclear if he means that all post Episode IX films will receive the Rogue One subtitle A Star Wars Story or if he’s using a more general term and that we might see some kind of new saga begin.

Iger also reiterated that the recent passing of Carrie Fisher will not impact her role in The Last Jedi.

“We had to deal tragedy at the end of 2016,” he says. “Carrie appears throughout VIII. We are not changing VIII to deal with her passing. Her performance remains as it is in VIII. In Rogue One, we had some digital character. We are not doing that with Carrie.”

I'm really starting to wonder if they'll recast Leia. It would break my heart, but it would also break my heart if they just killed Leia between Episodes VIII and IX too.

There's no good solution to this.

I hope the live action SW TV show is somewhere in there. I think Disney could do it justice.

And I think it may be best to let Princess Leia go. No matter how good the CGI tech is today, it's still not Carrie Fisher. :(

I have zero problem with a recast. Anakin Skywalker has been Jake Lloyd, Hayden Christensen, David Prowse, Spencer Wilding, James Earl Jones, Matt Lanter, and Sebastian Shaw. So what?

Well, we did hear that the Last Jedi will bring an end to the Skywalker era so I suppose something drastic will go down.
I sure hope not, at least for Luke not until the end of Episode 9. I realize Mark Hamill's legendary character has to pass the torch sometime, and it's inevitable what eventually must happen, but not sure I'm ready for his final curtain call just yet.

That and I think no matter how the story goes that luke would be pivotal either as a good guy, bad guy, somewhere in between. I can see killing han leia and even Chewbacca but to me Luke will be important.
I just wonder if carries passing changed what we will see (maybe she always died in 8, we don't know), and if it does change it will we ever find out what the original story would be. I for one would be very interested if it changes the story to hear how it was supposed to be before her untimely passing.

I think that 'the end of the Skywalker saga' just means that they're not going to be making any Skywalker movies for awhile. They're grouped in threes. I still think that Rey is going to turn out to be a Skywalker (or Solo-Skywalker), so unless they kill her and Ben Solo, I don't see the Skywalker clan being completely wiped out.

Star Wars has always been about the Skywalker family. Episodes IV, V, VI was Luke's story. Episodes I, II, II was Anakin's.
Disney did not use GL's treatment for VII, VIII, IX but I would assume that if GL was still in charge, another Skywalker there would be.
I say Rey is a Skywalker but I've heard of the Kenobi and Solo theories as well. What makes me think she is a Skywalker is she's good at fixing things and a great pilot. Just like Anakin. But I do offer up that Disney will probably throw us a curve ball. There's a reason why her surname has yet to be revealed. Is it December yet? :) j/k
