The flashlights in Tokyo's Monsters Inc. ride

How exactly do the flashlights in Tokyo Disneyland's Monsters Inc. Ride and Go Seek work? Are they detachable? What button do you push? And most importantly, how do they affect the scenes and the effects?

Can't answer how they work, but yes they are detachable in that they're like the Astro Blaster guns which have a holster which they can be taken in and out of (so you hold it in your hand). They also don't have any buttons, the flashlights are always on from the first show scene, so you just move it around.
