Like most, I did not see this movie in theatres. However, after watching it on Blu-ray I'm a little disappointed I didn't as it obviously would have been more impressive on the big screen.

Regardless, this is an excellent movie (better than most of the recent ones put out by Disney) and deserves to be more widely seen. It works as both a period piece and an action film, and while played sincerely never gets too corny. It also makes me want to get the book on which it's based to learn more about the people involved in the events depicted in the film.

Saw the presentation for it at D23 and thought "looks good, need to see that one." I think it played in a few local theaters for one week....then gone. It was this years "Timothy Green" a.k.a. a non-blockbuster, non mega budget pic that the company didn't support much. Sad.

According to Box Office Mojo it played in more than 3,100 theatres, but on it's opening weekend came in 4th place against Kung Fu Panda 3 (which stole away family audiences),The Revenant and Star Wars. It got an A- CinemaScore rating from those who saw it, but I think as an adult-oriented release it had too much competition from holiday & Oscar contending holdovers.

I can't imagine there being much left in the way of box office cash after SW and Panda. Horrible release date for such a small movie. It's like the company threw it to the wolves. It would have done much better just a few weeks later.
