Hello Everyone, my names Kyle and this is my first thread posting! Im very excited!:sohappy: I just wanted to ask a question to anyone who might know some information. I am currently a part-time Lead cast member at a local Disney Store in North Carolina. Our current Vice President announced at the annual District Managers meeting back in mid March that she had GREAT news for all the stores but couldnt offically announce anything for 6-8 weeks! I have heard tonight from a friend that her friend who does the return check thing for the parks and disny stores is now only handling return checks for the 5th Ave. store in NY and another store, but only two?:veryconfu

So...Finally the questions is...Dos anyone know what is gonna be the future of the Disney Stores?

Thank you all so much for any feedback and remember have a Magical Day!

You can expect an announcement by Andy Mooney (President - Disney Consumer Products) in May, 2004. If I were you, I would be looking for another job.

Hey Kyle,

My wife works at a Disney Store here in NC also. She is an assistant manager, and she heard the same information about the great news also. The Vice President is actually coming to her store 5/21. You would think that great news would mean the stores are not closing, but you never know. About the return policy thing you talked about, the parks never took returns from the stores. The only reason they take returns from the stores you mentioned is because the parks owns those stores. As far as people making comments telling you to find a new job.....they know nothing more than you do.

Ex-boss bids for Disney stores.
Times Online
3/20/2004

PETER MORRIS, the former chief executive of Coffee Republic, is seeking to make a return to the high street with an estimated £100 million bid for the franchise to run the Walt Disney retail stores in Britain and Europe.

Mr Morris, a former vice-president of Disney Stores and director of Dixons, the electricals retailer, is spearheading a consortium — backed with private equity — that is thought to be bidding against a syndicate led by P. Y. Gerbeau, the former Millennium Dome boss.

Both groups are carrying out due diligence on the 46 Disney stores in continental Europe and 60 in the UK. It is thought that Disney is hopeful of closing a deal within the next fortnight.

The disposal is part of Disney’s plan to offload its entire network of 450 stores in Europe and the US, which collectively lose an estimated $50 million (£27 million) a year. The unprofitable 335 outlets in North America have a single bidder.

A number of potential bidders for the American stores showed initial interest but withdrew after learning that Disney hoped to receive a percentage of the profits after the sale.

They also expressed concern that the eventual owner would be dependent upon Disney being able to drive merchandise sales with new film and TV products.

The value of the stores, which include the flagship outlets at Covent Garden and Oxford Street in Central London, has been estimated at between £60 million and £100 million.

Mr Morris left Coffee Republic in December 2002 after Bobby Hashemi, the chain’s founder, took back the management reins.

Woody13, you need to be a little more sensitive when you spew unintelligent babble on the internet. People depend on those Disney Store jobs, so play nice and BE SWEET!!!!

Well, I just got rehired the other night at the Disney Store, as a seasonal cast member again (thats right.. they are hiring seasonals now!!). I start May 8th, and... if they are hiring these seasonal people now, and asking part and full timers to take on more hours -- they must be expecting a huge amount of sales this summer and holiday season.

If you work at the Disney Store.. I wouldn't start looking for a new job yet... if anything... this so called "great" news will mean that the stores have been sold. I doubt if they would say they have great news and then shut down all the stores.

Get visit your local Disney Store!! New stuff is coming in all the time! I think the stores are making a good turn around... at least I know mine is.

Well, do you think it would be better for me to say, "Don't worry Kyle, The Disney Stores are a secure place for employment."? I think, for Kyle's sake, it's far better to be prepared for the worst (closure of the stores) rather than to give false hope.

If the stores stay open that's just great! However, if they suddenly close (or are purchased) Kyle could be out of a job. It would be far better for Kyle to have another job to fall back on just in case.

On the other hand I could take your position and ignore the realities of The Disney Stores financial failures and be totally insensitive to Kyle's situation.

So, my advice stands. Kyle needs to be prepared for the worst for Kyle's own sake.

Woody Woody Woody!!!!

I am not ignoring the financial nastiness that has clouded itself around the once proud Disney Stores( can you say lost $50 million?). Although they have made back a significant portion of what they lost, they are a financial burden. Nice point!!! Go Woody!!! :sohappy:

I am totally against people, um like you, who post things on the internet that are just NOT NICE:( . Like how the stores are sold in Europe and it was a done deal, yet did not happen. And then you act as if you have no doubt the U.S. Disney Stores will close. You are not alone. Jim Hill is on the same boat you are on. It is just you have no information to base your opinions on AT ALL. I think the term is "not credible".:D

My wife works for the Disney Store. We depend on her income to support us and our baby on the way. It is sad that people will make ridiculous claims with not one bit of hard fact to back up their stories. Because of people like you, and Jim Hill, and other internet "know it alls", my wife has at least a dozen lambs come into her store to ask when the store is closing.

I do hold out a positive outlook for these stores. I also hold out hope that you think before you post things you have no way of backing up or things you have no knowledge about. You say you are looking out for Kyle's best interest, but you are no help when you are un informed. Stick with what ya know it looks better on ya!!!

Well, woody and Mia's Daddy, if I might interject a thought or two here. First, my Wife and I are former cm's at local stores here in Austin. She was a part-time cm, then a an asst. mgr. I was a seasonal cm. After having worked there, we can say that there has been a shift in the attitude and outlook for the stores.

One of the 3 stores in Austin was closed, and we were told that the mall wanted to more than double the lease agreement it had with Disney. Disney declined, and decided to close the doors. Now some of the cms/mgrs. were given an option to move to the 2 other locations but not all of them. I wasn't brought back after my schedule was up at the end of the year. My wife, who had taken the place of another mgr. who left for maternity leave, was asked to move back down to her first position, and to take a pay cut in the process. After almost six months of holding the position of asst. mgr. with all the responsibilities included in that position, she felt very slighted. Now please understand that we love the company and both wanted to stay with the stores we worked at. But she declined the "offer" to take a pay cut, and so now we both are on the outside looking in.

Next, after returning from the yearly mgrs. meeting, which was held at WDW last year, our mgrs. were told that the benefits for Disney Store cms for the parks, (park tickets), were going away.
Now I'm of the opinion that this was a big mistake on the part of Disney. I could go on, but I'll just leave it at that.

Since we have left, our district mgr, and my former store mgr., both the nearly 10 years of loyalty to the company, both left the company amid rumors that the stores were "on the selling block" and that more closings were in the offing.

Not to mention the merchandising/stock issues that exist within the Store structure. Although we had many great offers for guests, there was too much pooh product and not enough of what our guests wanted to see in the stores. I will say that there has been a change for the better in the last year with regard to that matter, but with the economy being what it has been at the retail level for companys like Disney, there hasn't been a windfall of profits. So my guess is that this will be seen as not having helped the company, hence the need to shift back to the status quo.

I'm not sure that I would advise looking for other employment just yet, but I can certainly see where you might want to explore the environment a bit, just to see what's out there.

I tend to be a glass is half full kinda guy, and so I'm always hopeful that things are headed in a positive direction. Now I'm not sure that Disney relinquishing ownership of their stores is the right answer here. Any time you give up something that has your name attached to it, you take a tremendous risk. What if the company is moved in a direction not consistent with the traditions and values of the company? What recourse do you have? I believe this is one issue which has kept anything from happening to date with the stores. Rather, I'd like to see some changes with regard to the companys involvement with ABC/ESPN, viacom, etc. etc.

All we can do is wait to see what this "positive" news is and make our next move. I agree a new directions is very much needed at the stores. I wish they would sell theme park merchandise. But a dream is all that is. SEE YA!!!

I just love what you said...

The stores are such a wonderful way for a person to escape their normal world without having to actually visit the parks. By visiting your store frequently, and purchasing some of the new items that are now being offered once again.. you can help keep the magic in your town.

I can't imagine living here in Greensburg without my Disney Store. I don't really think my love of Disney would be near what it is today.

As a CM at a Disney Store, I have been on pins and needles for months and months trying to figure out what the fate of the stores in general (and my store in particular) will be.......they are playing it incredibly close to the vest! There have been times I thought for sure we would all be closed-- but now we are hiring and other stores are hiring, so who knows.....I would hope that the stores would not hire people knowing that within a short period of time they would all be closing.....aarrgghhhhhhh.....so I remain on pins and needles for a while longer!:veryconfu

Well VILLIANSRULE, you would think that it would be positive they are hiring people, but you never know. My wife is 6 months pregnant with our first child and we kinda need the health insurance ya know? Anyways, I don't think they are going to close.

I can't imagine Allentown without my store. I feel very at home there. If I can't be at WDW, I want to be at my store and I can't tell you how many guests have said that to me.

Before I worked at the store, my grandmother passed away very suddenly and the day following her death, my sister and I went to the store because it provided comfort we couldn't find any place else. I'm so thankful for the Disney Store because it gives me the opportunity to be a CM but not live in FL or LA.
