My girlfriend and I are originally from Cincinnati but I moved to Florida for college, and we got annual passes at the beginning of the school year this past year, and have been making trips just about every month since. Usually, what ends up happening, is that I’ll pick her up from the airport ,as she is finishing up school in Ohio, weather it be RSW or PGD usually (I go to FGCU) and then we head towards our AirBNB for the duration of the trip. However, I’m currently spending a little time at home for the summer, so the plan was to fly down from Columbus to Orlando for a quick week trip with my girlfriend, her sister, and her sisters fiancé.
We booked flights well in advance, as I usually book my flights 7-20 days ahead of departure, we booked around 2.5 months ahead of schedule. As we are all under 25, we decided to try Turo, the AirBNB of cars, to avoid the hefty underage fee that rent a car places charge. I guess you could say this trip was crafted by the millennial creation of sharing and renting cars and houses like Uber, AirBNB, and now Turo nowadays. After booking months ahead of time, it’s finally the night before we fly out, and I’m worried our flight my get cancelled or delayed. This is when tropical storm Alberto was passing...
Not even thinking about our Turo rental, I finally remembered to message the car owner to make sure everything was ready for the next morning. Sure enough, he told us that the car wasn’t available and asked if we would be ok with a different car. Basically with our hands tied, we said sure. All of this is taking place at 2:30 A.M., when we’re flying out at 6:00 A.M. the same morning. After a long back and forth, we manage to get the Turo booking cancelled and get a refund. We quickly booked a car through Carrentals.com while we were sitting on the plane.
We landed, and were in the shuttle to Greenmotion rent a car, and check out booking to learn too that that rental was also cancelled! We seemed to have missed the pick up time because we were in such a rush to book it, we put the pickup time as 10:30 A.M. when our flight didn’t even land till 10:50. After a lengthy line at greenmotion due to Memorial Day travelers, we finally get to an employee and make an on the spot rental for an underage driver, including tolls, for $180 for the ENTIRE WEEK (6 full days)! Has anyone ever used Greenmotion before and can vouch that this is a consistent price?
After having an amazing four days at the parks, we go back to MCO to fly home, only to sit around the airport for 12 hours as our flight gets delayed, inevitably gets cancelled, and then we find ourselves making the 14 hour drive home after we’ve already been up for 18 hours.
Oh the things I will go through to be in the happiest place on earth.
