The CARS Premiere - my review

I was going to write this last night when we got home, but since it was 1:30 in the morning (and we live less than 1.5 hours from the speedway) I was a little tired. :lookaroun

First of all, no cameras, so no pictures.

We'll start out with the weather, which was dreadful early on. I left work at 2 pm so we'd have plenty of time to get there for the red carpet, which was supposed to start around 6:30. At 6:30, we were stuck in traffic on Highway 29. We were playing back and forth with several black Lincolns with dark windows and one white stretch. I told my husband, "wouldn't it be something if those were the stars and they were late like us." But we decided that they were just limo renters wanting to look big at the premiere, because the stars would have already been there. We drove my little bug with the license plate BUG LIFE, so I thought if by chance it was maybe Disney or Pixar people, they might see my tag.

Anyway, we finally got to the speedway around 7 pm. The rain had almost stopped! Yea! Parked and started walking around to find our gate. We happened upon the red carpet on our way there, and much to our surprise, there were the Lincolns we'd "raced" back on 29!!! Somehow we got right up to the fence, so we were able to see them all! I can't remember the exact order, and when I looked in my bag for a pen to write everything down and for autographs, I realized I didn't have one! So, here's the stars we saw arrive:

Bonnie Hunt was one of the first ones. She looked nice. Jeans and a blazer. They had umbrellas waiting for all of the stars and their families.

The King Richard Petty was also one of the early ones. He looked just like he always does - tall with a big black cowboy hat. All smiles.

John Lassiter was in the early group too. It was sad because there were very few yells for him. I don't think people knew who he was...

Oh, how could I forget, Larry the Cable Guy was I think before Bonnie. He really worked the crowd. So funny! Dressed in that same brown plaid shirt. He had a camo cap on with the CARS logo on it. I looked for one to buy, but they only had solid black ones. Larry was the MC for the evening.

Other stars that you know you know, but then you have to wait till they introduce them until you remember their name were Paul Dooley, Jenifer Lewis, and Edie McClurg.

Then Cheech came out. He looked shorter than I thought he would be, though I'd never really thought about it. Just one of those, hmmm, I thought he'd be taller, sort of moments.

And, whew, Paul Newman. He looked great. Definitely not like Cool Hand Luke, but time has been very kind to him.

It looked like the stands were getting full, and since our tickets only guaranteed the section we were in, not our seats, we decided to move on in. We were not so thrilled when we saw that our section, which looked to be in the center on the map, was not directly in view of one of those 11 story wide screens (which weren't even up!) However, when we sat down we realized we were front and center for the live stage!

They were drying the track when we sat down. It was really loud, but we were able to hear the announcer as he announce all of the arrivals. They were showing on large screens around turn 2 so we could all see the stars arrive. We saw Owen Wilson (who I'd heard wasn't too friendly with any of the press this week except the Hollywood Foreign Press), Tony Shaloub, Darrell Waltrip, John Ratzenberger and Katherine Helmond arrive. Never did see Robert Iger arrive, and I was bummed. I had wanted to see him and I figured he just wasn't going to be there. Hunger was setting in...

So, I headed to the pretzel stand, which in true Disney fashion, was $3 per pretzel. I did notice you could not buy beer at this event. Just Coke products. After a pretzel, I turned to the souvenir stand hoping to get some goodies. All they had were t-shirts (two designs), a cap, and a single pin style. I bought the kids a shirt, ok and me too, and two pins. The shirts were $15 for kids sizes and $22 for adults, and they didn't even have the Disney tag - they were Fruit of the Loom. However the pins were reasonable at $6 each. No one in my family wears caps, so we skipped it, though it was a nice one. Black with the logo on the front and "World Premiere" on the side. Hubby didn't want a souvenir. (I've taken pics of the stuff, but for some reason my printer isn't wanting to talk to the computer this morning, so I can't upload them. When I can, I'll put them here.)

Again, I can't remember the order of everything, so I may be out of order on some of the events that follow. But the main thing is, they did all occur - and for the very reasonable price of only $10 per ticket, which amazed me!

Oh, and while I was out getting a pretzel I was within hand-shaking distance of Norm Mineta, Transportation Secretary. I tried to say hello, but what I figure was secret service was walking him pretty quickly. I was surprised he was on the "everyday people level", as he was part of the red carpet and sat with the stars and was introduced. Maybe he wanted a pretzel too. Oh, and I had thought the stars would be in a box seat, but they sat in the stands just like us.

One disappointment I had was not getting some kind of schedule of events. They took the time to hand me a piece of paper telling me not to bring in a camera - they could have put a short schedule on that same paper...

Ok, so we've seen the stars arrive. They are running behind due to the rain, but it is absolutely beautiful out now, and other than the loud track driers and my wet behind, you'd never know just how miserable the weather was an hour before. They've decided the track is dry enough and they bring out a pace car and 8 race cars - the Petty Experience car, the 17 Darrell Waltrip car but with just the CARS logo on it, and six others. (Sorry, I'm not a big race fan anymore, so I just don't know the numbers like others might.)
**Oh, forgot that we also saw Dale Earnhart Jr and Brad Paisley.
So, Darrell Waltrip is the only one of the old school drivers actually driving in this event, and they have him lined up midway back. I reached over to my husband and said, how much you want to bet the CARS car wins?

The cars started up and the one in front of 17 "wouldn't start" so Waltrip pushed him a ways. Then it started, and it looked like 17 just wasn't going to win. They were running 12 laps, and wouldn't you know it, right there at the end 17 won the race! Amazing how that happened.;)

While the cars were racing, they started raising the screens. They had been in long black boxes spaced along the turn. They were huge! But then I noticed that the screen nearest us wasn't raising. I later realized they kept it down so those to the left of us could see the end of the race which was on the far side of the track.

I think I'm out of order here. I think I skipped the military display. It was really great! They had the band there, the guys who put on an awesome display with the rifles, and they did a fly-over. Those F16s (I think) were so close, it was just breathtaking. Just such a proud moment for some reason. Got me a little choked up. I think they said the F16s came in from Seymore AFB. There were 4 of them in a V.

At some point there were some fireworks. Which you would expect from Disney, wouldn't you? Nice little display.

I'd better save this before I lose it...

part 3

Its dark now, so I'm figuring the movie will start soon. That darn rain really put everything behind, but it shouldn't be long now, should it???

My daughter needed to potty, so I took her, and when we got back there was a singing group performing. I'm sorry but I don't know who they were. Didn't recognize them. Hubby said something about "Moon Walkers" or something like that. They were ok, but I could have done without it. Brad Paisley sang 3 songs. He was great. I wish he'd been the only musical performer of the night. (And remember, my $10 ticket got me all of this entertainment!) The other musical performer was Chuck Berry. WOW! This was going to be just awesome - what a legend! Well, the legend should have stayed a legend and not performed. It was sad. Really sad. I didn't expect him to be running around the stage sliding on his knees, but I did hope he'd be in tune and keep up with the band with his guitar, neither of which happened. Some of the early ousts on American Idol were better. I was really disappointed, and felt sorry for him, but maybe he didn't hear how bad he was.

Larry introduced John Lassiter and Robert Iger to the stage to present $1 million to children's charities. (I'd like to insert that Iger is an attractive man.) And being front and center of the live stage, we got a great view without having to watch the screens. Paul Newman came on stage, along with Bruton Smith and The King. They had the super-sized checks to present. Again, this may be out of sequence, I'm doing the best I can from memory.

All of the stars were introduced and they showed them on the screens. (By this time my nearest movie screen was up - whew.) The stars had spent the week in children's hospitals across North Carolina. Very nicely done. During introductions, they also introduced groups representing the two main charities benefitting from the proceeds of the evening.

Finally, at 10 pm the movie was about to start. My kids were already asleep at this point. Some people began to leave immediately. (I think some of the crowd was just there to see the NASCAR stars and could care less about Pixar movie premieres.) So we saw the movie, which I won't discuss so there won't be any spoilers. It was really cute. My personal opinion: Though Owen Wilson is the "star", the movie was made by Larry and Paul Newman.

AS ALWAYS: be sure to stay for the credits. John Ratzenberger's character is soooooo funny in them! No spoilers, I promise...but its hard not to.

Then, after the credits rolled, the fireworks really let loose. I would guess maybe 5 minutes of them. Made me want to get to Disney World pronto. Fantastic display, just as you would expect from Disney.

And then we headed to the field to find our car and get out. It was 12:09 am by my watch. Quite a night!

I think that's it. But if I remember anything else, I'll be sure to update this. Hope you enjoyed.

The movie was really good. I don't think it was the best Pixar movie ever, but a really good movie. I would personally put it ahead of Bug's Life, Monsters Inc, and Toy Story 2, but it would take a lot to top Toy Story, Finding Nemo and The Incredibles in my opinion. Also, I think I will enjoy the movie more when I see it in the theater and have a screen in front of me instead of angled away...

Ok, this is a bummer!

My husband just called. He had to take a vending machine to the truck terminal to ship to a customer (he refurbs antique machines and sells them). Anyway, he said there was a guy there shipping stuff from the premiere last night. He either worked for Disney or was contract. Anyway, Alan got to talking to him and was talking about how we had a Hudson Hornet just like the one Paul Newman portrayed. We even left our wedding in it when we got married 11 years ago. The guy said Disney had been trying to find someone local who had one so they could drive Newman around the track at the premier in it. If they'd known about our car, we would have gotten VIP tickets and met Paul, etc. He said there's just no way to find out some of this stuff, but he hated they hadn't known about us.
So close, yet so far away.:brick:

I'm not a very steady hand, so the pin is a bit blurred, but it has the date at the bottom...

We were there also, and everything was absolutely incredible! There were fireworks during the national anthem which was sung by Diamond Rio (I think). They went off during the "rockets red glare" part and then at the end before the F-16 flyover. The fireworks at the end though were awesome. The song "Life is a Highway" (which is in the movie - great soundtrack) started right when the movie credits ended and the big screens went dark. The fireworks included lots of the high ones, several smilies, and I think a heart. I thought that one of the coolest displays was a ground level "sparkler" sort of thing (but 30 feet high) which were in the shape of the Cars logo (red and silver in a V shape) - it was really neat. As PixyDust said, the whole evening was really great - especially for $10! I was afraid that my daughter wasn't going to make it through the movie, but she rallied and stayed awake. She fell asleep before we got to the interstate though!

The band that started the show was called "Party on the Moon". They were good, but I thought the second guy singer's mike was too low. Considering that all that equipment had suffered through a nasty thunderstorm (which we waited out standing next to the replica of "Mack" that transports the "Cars" show cars around), I thought everything went off pretty darn well.
Other points to add:
The pace car driver for the "World Premiere Shootout" was a Disney executive - Richard Cook.
I have a different shirt. If I had any idea how, I would post pictures. My husband has the hat - it's really neat too - black with the logo, date, and "World Premiere."
The premiere was sponsored by Kodak.
Larry the Cable Guy was the emcee for the evening. I have never really seen his stuff before, but for this occasion, he was really funny. He did some comedy in between introducing the stars, the check presentation and the musical groups.
We were right in front of one of the screens. It was amazing how big they were and how cool the three projectors aimed at each were. From what I read, these digital DLP projectors were overlayed to make sure the images were not degraded. It looked great to me - even when it rained for 15-20 minutes during the movie.
The staff handed out clear ponchos, but I saw quite a few WDW ones also (including ours:D ).
