My name is Brian Martin, and I'm from Chicago. I have been a huge Disney fan all my life, and I need your help. I started a Facebook page and petition that are part of a campaign to get Disney to release The Black Cauldron fully uncut on Blu-Ray for its 30th anniversary next year. From what I understand, 12 minutes of completed animation and music were cut from the movie by Jeffrey Katzenberg soon before its premiere. Producer Joe Hale and his wife Beverly have already given me their approvals by signing the petition I started, signing another petition started a few days ago by someone else in Ohio, and by writing some messages on my Facebook page. They told me the uncut master negative should be somewhere in the Disney archives. If you are interested, please go to these links to sign the two petitions, like my page, and share them with others!

As I understand it, the best of the cut footage dealing with the Cauldron Born is lost for good, unfortunately.

But the footage can't be lost for good. It's impossible! Unlike most studios, Disney never cuts anything from their own "master negatives," so it should all still exist somewhere in their film vault.

It can happen that they don't exist anymore. Years ago when one of the backlots in Hollywood was lost to a fire, a lot of their old movie collections, originals and masters were lost because of it. I have no idea if black cauldron original exists still but I do enjoy the movie!

That depends when in the production process they were cut.
You seem to be assuming that all the cuts were made at the same time, and that all were finished animation.
This is unlikely.

Do you even know the history of the movie's production? Look up Mike Peraza's "Cauldron of Chaos" article, and the cut footage stuff is explained in part 3.
