AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - Actor Jason Patric (news), who stars as Texas hero Jim Bowie in the new film "The Alamo," was arrested for public intoxication and jailed for several hours on Monday after scuffling with an Austin policeman.
Austin police said on Tuesday that Patric, 37, was in a group of people that officers ordered to move along from a downtown street intersection at about 2:45 a.m. CST/3:45 a.m. EST on Monday.
Patric failed to comply, a police statement said, and resisted officer Joshua Visi when he tried to arrest him. The two fell to the ground in the scuffle.
He was taken to Travis County Jail and released later on his own recognizance. Police also charged him with resisting arrest.
Patric publicist Michelle Bega said he had done nothing wrong and had to be treated for "substantial physical injuries" suffered in the skirmish.
"When the videotape of the incident is reviewed it reveals that Jason Patric did nothing wrong. He was passively standing on the street corner when the police officer suddenly lunged at him," Bega said in a statement.
The officer "threw him to the ground without provocation and attempted to smash his head on to the concrete. Jason was not intoxicated," she said.
Patric had been in San Antonio, 80 miles south of Austin, for the premiere on Saturday of "The Alamo," a Disney film about the famed 1836 battle between Texas rebels and Mexican soldiers.
The film also stars Billy Bob Thornton (news) as Davy Crockett and Dennis Quaid (news) as Sam Houston.
Some of his other films include "Narc," "The Lost Boys" and "Speed 2: Cruise Control."
