I love Legacy Reviews, but I find that sometimes I can't see a movie when it's in the theaters, or I want to discover something not in theaters now. This is what this series is about, discovering the new in DVDs. I will hit the hidden, the popular, and my favorites. If you have a good one for me to look at, send me a PM. Anyway, there really is no structure to these, I will post some new, some old, some borrowed, and some blue. You will see concert DVDs, movies, and collections. So no offense Legacy, this isn't to undermine you, but to complement and expand the offerings here. So to my first review!

The Matrix Ultimate Collection

Odd things come in odd packages. For those who got the normal set, you have a nice Matrix code box with 10 DVDs inside. If you got the limited edition one, you have a bust of Neo with it, probably overstock from their online store. But what is really odd is how much the two latter, and lesser, movies really are improved in this set, not that the movie is remastered, but that the information, and commentaries, rub off on them.

First, what do you get? You get 10, yes, 10 DVDs: The Matrix, The Matrix Revisited, The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Reloaded Revisited, The Matrix Revolutions, The Matrix Revolutions Revisited (see a pattern), The Animatrix, and The Burly Man Archives, The Zion Archives, and The Matrix Philosophy.

Unlike the others, The Matrix has been remastered to improve it's picture quality and sound, something that really improves the movie. While the Matrix Revisited series is nice, they leave out some of the features available in the off-the-shelf version of the movie, such as the MTV awards parody of The Matrix Reloaded and some advertisements, something that prevents this from being a complete Matrix collection. Unfortunately, the Zion archives don't offer much other than some pictures, and it's interface is about as easy to use, and imaginative, as a brick.

The major two things that sell this set are the commentaries by the philosophers on each of the movies, and the philosopher documentary of the movies. Both are worth the price of admission alone.

The Matrix Ultimate Collection is a great set for those fans, but due to some omission and disappointments, I can't give this a great rating. So I give The Matrix Ultimate Collection...

A 3.... out of 5.

Ok good. I was one of those pea-brained yahoos who had the lack of vision to actually buy the "regular" DVDs when they came out, and was really POd when they came up with a box set that had "even more extras!" The only thing that I was really looking forward to was the philosophers' commentary, since I find it would be quite complementary to the "Matrix and Philosophy" book. So, if you look at it a certain way, the commentaries will be "worth the price of the set alone" for me. Oh well. At least I have all of the Lord of the Rings Extended Editions (hehehehe...)
