Ten Percent Rule

So did anyone else see the article in the Science section of the NY Times this week about the 10% rule in running being strictly lore with no serious studies to prove it? It was interesting. Apparently some recent studies were done that tend to show that increasing mileage by more than 10% per week does not lead to a greater number of injuries. They weren't comparing 10% and 50% increases - more like 15 to 20% increases.

This is not all that surprising. You will find that staggering amount of health related rules, advice, etc have no basis in science. Many are at best logical hypotheses. The bad thing is that so many people will get these rules stuck in their heads and no amount of research will ever get them out. No one like to be told that they are wrong. ABC's recent attempted crucifixion of David Allison is a great example of this. http://blogs.forbes.com/trevorbutterworth/2011/06/22/abc-news-attacks-scientist-who-exposed-bias-in-obesity-research/

That's exactly how the article ended. Peopple read or hear this "fact" somewhere and believe it and pass it along to the next believer.

Yeah. People do not see the up side about being wrong.....you get to learn something new. A great example how is should work would be the cast of Mythbusters. When they tested the elephant scared of mice myth everyone was convinced that the elephants would not be the least bit put off. When it was discovered that they were wrong Adam and Jamie we thrilled to death. The same thing happened when Tory, Grant and Kari tested bull in a china shop. The bulls did not break a thing and they were simple elated because they found out they were wrong all along.

But alas most people do not do this.

If I got paid as much as the Mythbusters, I would be okay with never being right again...:lookaroun

It's almost as bad as "anything that is natural won't hurt me" that people swear by.

As a research monitor, I want to shake them. People, cyanide is natural...

I use to get a kick out of those people that would say, "I dont use any man made drugs, just the ones from the earth man" because you know that stoner didnt research the positve/negative results of "natural" drugs found on earth.... and then I would double laugh when they would light up a cigarette.

What is even better is so many of the "drugs" were derived from natural sources. It just took the lab to break out the effective elements, synthesize them and make it a viable treatment. Penicillin is from mold, aspirin from tree bark, morphine is from the opium plant, etc.
