Tell the Story or Not

I was thinking recently about the two approaches used in movie themed Disney rides. Some rides like SWSA and Peter Pan among others try to re-tell the story of the movie they are based on. On the other hand rides like Radiator Springs Racers and Indiana Jones: Temple of the Forbidden Eye, feature characters from movie and try to capture it's flavor, but don't actually tell a story from the film.

I think not trying to tell the original story really frees up the Imagineers and gives them a lot more flexibility in what they can design.

What do you think? Which approach to you prefer?

I prefer something totally new and exciting, but retelling fantastic Disney classics are always fun :)
