Telephone calls at Disney

Probably enough to make your hair stand on end.
I don't know if you've seen them up in Canada, but if you can get to a local Walmart in Florida, you can pick up a Tracphone fairly cheaply. They're not the best phone in the world, but they do work and usually come with some minutes that may be enough to cover your time here. Since they're cheap (30-40$US), you can always toss it out when you're done. If you need to check in with home daily, it may still be cheaper than using the hotel phone.

You're better off using a cell phone because Disney charges something like a 55% service charge to all calls. VERY expensive

If I remember correctly it was only a 75 cent charge for dialing a 1 800 number from a Disney resort phone. The number is 1 800 555 1111. After dialing it it will ask you to pick your language then you put in your calling card number, flowed by the number you are calling.

The phone themselves start around $20 (US) and go up depending ont he features and styles you want. You can buy card with units/minutes for your phone. You have 60 day to use your units in.
All you have to do is charge up the phone and then activate it via a land line or the internet at their website. You get 10 minutes to start with when you activate. After 60 days if you don't put a new card on your phone you will lose service and the number. It cost one unit of time off your phone for one mintue of airtime you use. That is regardless if it is a roaming, long distance or local call. You can text message with it. Receiving text messages are free but sending cost you .3 units.

1) Tracfone is the way to go if you want portability, and they are relatively cheap.
2) Or you could just buy a calling card. There are still pay phones everywhere at WDW and it's more fun calling from one of them than your room anyway (guess where I am? calls are always fun!). Though many of the payphones in the outside world have disapeared, they still are in abundance at WDW.
In either case, just don't use that room phone...they charge .75cents for just a single local call! It's the only "racket" I feel needs to be changed at WDW - it's just ridiculously expensive and unnessecary, especially with the local calls.
