Aah yes, Spring has finally sprung. The weather is getting warmer, the flowers are blooming, and people's thoughts are gradually shifting from shoveling snow to reopening swimming pools. Spring is a glorious time of year...not the dreadful heat of summer...not the bitter cold of winter...just the right temperature to be outdoors. But while we spend this time of year appreciating nature, colorful flora, and wildlife emerging from winter's slumber, we often overlook one of the most amazing discoveries which first came to our knowledge during the Spring season. I am talking, of course, about Uranus. That's right. How often do you really sit down and think about Uranus, and what it means to you? Very seldom, I assume. So I figured why not make an appreciation thread where we all can come & share stories & fondness of Uranus.
Let's take a trip back in time, if you will:
It is a nice Spring day in the year 1781. Many astronomers are buzzing with talk of a newly discovered planet; the 7th planet from the Sun. Back on March 13th, a man by the name of Sir William Herschel observed this new planet from a telescope he designed himself. At first questioning whether or not this new discovery is a planet, comet, or star...Herschel soon contacts Astronomer Royal: Nevil Maskelyne...and a few weeks later on April 23, he will receive this response:
So back to the year 2013, I would like to encourage each & every one of you to take time to reflect upon Uranus, and the true significance it has in your life. Perhaps on a clear night, invite some friends & neighbors over so they too may take a gander at Uranus. Talk to coworkers about Uranus & get their feedback. May this truly be a season of beauty, new beginnings, and most importantly, a time to reflect on the benefits & glories of Uranus.
Happy Spring to you & Uranus!

Alas, after further research it is concluded that this new object is in fact a planet! Herschel is honored by King George III for his discovery, the planet is officially documented, and voila! we have Uranus. The rest is history.Nevil Maskelyne said:I don't know what to call it. It is as likely to be a regular planet moving in an orbit nearly circular to the sun as a Comet moving in a very eccentric ellipsis. I have not yet seen any coma or tail to it.
