SWA Early Bird

I didn't get Early Bird check in when I got my Southwest tickets, but I can still add it. I usually don't bother, because I am a beast at hitting the 24-hour window.
But...this trip will be with my father in a wheelchair. We will be gate-checking the chair.
SWA seems to imply that we would get to pre-board as passengers "needing extra assistance."
Has anyone has experience with gate checking a wheelchair?

Thanks.

We travel to Orlando using Southwest every time. My observation is that they allow those in wheelchairs on first. They are lined up close to the door of the tarmack. We always get Early Bird check in so we watch the folks in wheelchairs get on the plane first before Group A.

Do not bother paying for EB is you are going to pre-board anyway. Anyone in a wheelchair and their companion will board first. When you gate check something, you will go to the gate agent and tell them you are needing to gate check the wheelchair. You will pre-board and an employee will meet you down at the end of the jet way and take the wheelchair. You will then get on the plane and they usually have those people sit in the first couple of rows. It is very easy and the staff is very nice and helpful.
