Pre-Trip Surprise trip… sort of

DS (7) wants to be surprised on our next WDW trip. We’re DVC and are very lucky to go to the world about every 10 months. So, he obviously knows we’ll be going soon, but doesn’t know the exact date. At first he wanted me to let him know 2 weeks out. (What kind of surprise is that??) Gritting my teeth, I told him we could make that happen. In the last month or so he’s changed his mind and now wants me to wake him up the day we’re supposed to leave and say, “IT’S DISNEY TIME!!”

I mean, seriously, who plans their own surprise??

I’ve tried to warn family and friends, so that they don't ruin the surprise. But, since we go every year, almost everyone we know has asked when our next trip is. I usually say, oh we don't know yet - then when DS is out of range, I explain how he wants to be surprised. The reaction, every time, is a look of "She's nuts" and then a mumble when they walk way of, “But they go every year…”

Anyway, this strange land of “sort of a surprise” has messed with trip planning since DS and I always plan together. Well, instead, I’m all covert-like. Talking like a nut - “Hey, um, DS, if you could eat anywhere for your birth- , um, I mean, ya know, eating at Walt Disney World, it's cool, right? like is there anywhere special, so yeah, whadaya think?”

So, he’s come to the conclusion that the trip will happen some time around his birthday in September. He thinks he has an idea of when the trip will be, but he still wants to be surprised. It’s really kind of cute - he get’s all giddy thinking about going and being surprised.

Which is why I’m trying so hard to keep it a surprise!

We’re going a month ahead of his birthday, and his birthday-dinner will be exactly one month before his birthday. :) I’m hoping the timing will work in my favor of being surprise successful!

So you're probably wondering why a surprise is such a big deal for DS:
Pre-DVC, when DS was 3.5, we decided we should take a trip to WDW. It had been about 5 years since DH and I had gone, and that trip was DH’s first. It was an all adult, drinking, party, sleeping-late trip. Well, now that we had DS, we were ready to have the full out family trip - surprise reveal and all.

I made a scavenger hunt for DS - age appropriate with pictures. Not the best video ending, I wish DH would have kept filming, and I wish I would have cleaned the clutter a bit, but here's the reveal:

Yup - “Let’s go next week” is an ongoing joke in our family now. Our belief is that he was having too much fun playing scavenger hunt with Mommy and Daddy and wanted to stay home and play. Another thought, is that we told him we would be getting on a BIG PLANE - Jay Jay the Jet Plane repeats were popular on tv and who wouldn’t be afraid of getting on one of those??

What isn’t recorded is the full out meltdown DS had getting dressed. We calmed him down with a bribe of going to Dunkin’ (parenting at it’s best). We ran into two very nice policemen who made DS’s day by showing him their badges and just being super cool. When we mentioned that we were headed to the airport, they made a big deal of it and all was well in DS’s world.

We did, however, arrive to the airport about 4 hours too early to avoid going home and having another meltdown. The really ridiculous part is that DS never had tantrums growing up. I can remember maybe 2 - and both were over ice cream. He’s such a go-with-the-flow kid, and always has been. So, this really threw DH and I off our game - thank goodness for the nice policemen and a doughnut!

Back to the current trip planning!
Here’s the plan: 8/15 one night stay at All Star Sports, then switching to Bay Lake Tower for 10 nights. (I’ll explain why that makes sense later.)

Attending will be myself, DH, and DS (7).

I hope you’re willing to follow along to see if I can pull off this surprise. I could use some support from other Disney lovers! Especially as an outlet to talk about my travel plans since my assistant planner is in the dark. Thanks in advance!! :)

Sounds like fun, I'm in! FWIW, Wild Africa Trek is $50/person off while you are there, a 3 hour tour with a lunch!

That's awesome! Thank you! I may need to see if I can fit this into our plans. My only concern is that DS is 7, but he'll be celebrating his 8th birthday unofficially while we're there. Is this the tour that you need to be at least 8? I'm going to check out your TR - I've heard awesome things about this tour!

Thank you! We had a family BBQ today and I kept looking over my shoulder whenever anyone asked me about our upcoming Disney plans. Think I'm still in the clear!

I love the idea of a surprise trip! It's hilarious that he's planning his own surprise! Following along. :)

Thanks!! He is so funny. It's almost like he knows I'm in the midst of planning, but is avoiding finding out. Fingers crossed!

Day 1, plan B:
Our original plan (plan A) was to arrive at BLT on Sunday. This changed because airfare is wacky in the summer. DH has 100,000 miles that will expire in Sept if we don't use them. We were able to get 2 round trip tickets with miles. YAY!! The third ticket was $100 more if we flew on Sunday vs Saturday. We decided to use that $100 toward a room instead and can now go a day earlier than we expected! (Plan B)

So my advice for all future vacations: Keep looking for cheaper airfare and gain an extra day of vacation!! ;)

We'll be staying at All Star Sports for the "bonus night." I'm very excited about this because DS is hugely obsessed with baseball and has been since he was 2. As an overall fan of sports, I think he'll really enjoy the theming.

Anyone have advice for what we should check out at AS Sports? We hope to be on property around 5pm. HS has EMH that night, and I was hoping to catch Fantasmic. Is this a terrible idea?

I have FPs for RnR, and 2 others that I don't think we'll make in time. Would it be better to get Fantasmic?

Sidebar: Family Background of “The Surprise"

I've been remiss!! I can't believe that I forgot to explain why a surprise trip is such a big deal for DS.

I’ve added the details and the video of the reveal to the first post - since I think that’s where it really belongs. Please forgive my novice pre-trip blunder!

Ha! We did a big surprise for our 4 kids in 2009. Yeah. there was a lot of wailing of tears and gnashing of teeth too. And they were older! (9.7.6.4) Ya just never know. Side note, I have that same hoodie your DH is wearing in the picture! Anyway, following along!

You see all these videos online about kids freaking out because they're so excited to be surprised with a trip to the world. It just never dawned on me that he wouldn't want to go! I hope your four didn't put up too much of a protest, and that you had an amazing trip!! Thanks for following along!!

This is was cute! I got a little teary eyed when he found Mickey. You truly never know what to expect with kids - too funny!!

Awww... You are too sweet! Kids defitely put you on that emotional roller coaster! Thanks for watching!

I think it's hysterical that he wants to be surprised. Great video. Have fun planning!

Thank you!! I think it's hysterical, too :D

Thanks for the share! Great video! And like so many already told here, great that your sons 'knows' that Disney is coming up, but then again wants to be surprised!! Enjoy the pre feelings!

Thanks! We watched an "Ultimate Walt Disney World" special that's a few years old the other night. He's starting to get antsy about going. Let's hope that "want for a surprise" makes it through the next 2 months! I'll have to find some summer distractions ;)

More background info that will hopefully explain my current planning reasoning when we get there.

2014 visits to WDW:
Our trips in 2014 were rather chilly since we went in January and December. It wasn’t the Northeast-freeze-your-tushie-off cold, but 60 and cloudy gets cold quickly when you’re outside all day. However, this cool weather allowed us to go to the parks without having to rest mid-day. We were also very silly with some Itty-Bitty’s who joined us in December. Oh, and the Elf on the Shelf ,“Elfie,” found us at AKL - quite a smartie that one.

Our first day in Dec - I think it felt the warmest to us after being in PA. Gotta love the decorations during the holidays.

(I know you're not used to seeing that big, ball of light in the sky, but just smile for Mommy!)

Elfie - at home, giving us a hint that we might see him

And he used his magical powers to find us at AKL!
IMG_2464_zpskmmetgtr.jpg

Who knew he was also a fan of SOTMK??

So as you can see, this trip was quite silly and fun... and continued through out the parks.

Mickey and Pluto really enjoyed stealing our food. And were quite naughty.

Anyway... visiting WDW in January and December were very different experiences than what it will be when we visit this summer. I feel like I need to plan for the parks in the early mornings, rest/pool mid-day, and back at the parks in the evening/late night. It's almost like we're getting double the trip if we can hit two parks in a day. :D

This is the exact opposite of the way that I planned for the winter. We wanted to be out during the peak sun times to stay warm.

But, I also know that the heat is going to be like a member of our trip that we cannot discount. It will be exhausting, annoying, whining, and unbearable. Hopefully, I've accounted for this little menace enough and instead, we will enjoy and embrace using the pools and resort more. At the very least, I am going to LOVE walking around with no coats, no sweatshirts, and no hats (besides our ears)! Yippie!!

I LOLd when I saw your itty bitty hijinks!

I'm taking my niece/goddaughter to WDW in August as her 8th grade graduation present (I'm providing room and meals and escort, her mom and dad are picking up airfare, park tix and spending money), and for Mother's Day she gave me an itty bitty of Merida, because that's my MDE avatar. So for her graduation day, I got her the Belle itty bitty, because that's her avatar, so that we could instagram Merida & Belle's adventures. :)
