The Capitalization of Surfing
Of all the popular sports that exist today surfing has the biggest potential for economic growth and profit. Many factors have prevented surfing from realizing it's full potential. Lack of waves, dangerous conditions and difficulty to learn to surf are the major obstacles. We can now solve all the obstacles that are holding this incredible sport back. When we build this future for surfing we will create the epicenter of surfing. It will instantly become the "World's Greatest Surfing Destination".
We propose Disney build three Surf the Rings. Two small rings capable of making 2 - 4 feet waves for training and surfing "fun" size waves and one large ring capable of making 5 - 8 feet waves for advanced surfers.
Surf the Rings will literally revolutionize surfing because it represents four quantum leaps in surfing technology - endless traveling waves, dynamically changing waves, fields of simultaneous waves, and high efficiency waves. These four aspects combine to create the most extremely exciting and financially profitable future for surfing.
Growing the sport will be easy. Surfing is a great family sport, young and old alike love to ride waves. Surf the Rings is very safe and extremely easy to learn how to surf because it produces perfect endless training waves on one of the small rings. A small ring could train approximately 1000 new surfers a day!
Surf the Rings technology allows for what is probably the most lucrative of all its' amazing attributes, it will turn surfing into a spectator's sport. On demand surfing competitions live televised events and creation of events never before possible such as "speed" surfing will attract big numbers of spectators and they will pay to see the most exciting "new" sport ever seen. The large ring could accommodate tens of thousands of spectators for any event.
All three rings combined will produce an amazing 288 hours of surfing time in just 12 hours a day. If the park were open 16 hours a day it would create 384 hours of surfing!
Utilization of the Rings
Disney is of course the absolute expert on how to maximize visitors through it’s attractions. Below we offer simple examples of how Surf the Rings might be utilized. Two possible concepts seem probable, free surf and sessions surfing. It would easily be possible to run each ring on either concept however the large ring should probably be sessions surfing because of the large powerful waves and the need to ensure that there could only be one surfer on each wave.
Free Surf – This ring would allow an “all surf” environment. Unlimited numbers of surfers, boogie boarders body surfers, etc. to be enjoying the waves. The advantage here is greater capacity for a lot more people in the water having fun. More people would translate into more profit.
Sessions Surfing – The advantages of sessions are the ability for surfers to reserve a time and date to surf and to guarantee a number of waves the surfer will ride. A session would need to be a controlled entry and exit for each surfer. In order to calculate the maximum utilization from sessions surfing we will make some assumptions. Each session will be 30 minutes, each surfer will get 5 waves (over 300 seconds of surfing or 5 revolutions around the ring) and each session has 48 surfers and 48 standbys. The Standby surfers would surf any empty waves caused by a surfer wiping out before surfing the full revolution around the ring.
