Superstar Limo inspired Mission Breakout

One of the biggest Disneyland Resort related backlashes of our time was that of the one caused by Mission Breakout. The backlash escalated quite quickly once during press previews footage had footage where the voice of Rocket Raccoon was heard exclaiming “Disneyland? That’s thematically inconsistent!” But what if I told you it was a reference to Superstar Limo?

Superstar Limo was originally intended to have a gift shop at the exit that quite similarly to Galaxy’s Edge (another project that undoubtedly was also inspired by Superstar Limo) had cast members play a part in the story. Cast members would act as if you were a true bonafide movie star and be your paparazzi. Sadly, the budget was running quite short and the gift shop was cut from the plans. The exit corridor was instead given a sign that inspired all future meta Disneyland jokes (including Mission Breakout’s”joke”)

I was expecting an imagineering forum where mission breakout got an overhaul where instead of gotg, it's superstar limo puppets.
Needless to say, I am only slightly disappointed.

I assume Corey Burton did the voice of both Shifty La Rue and Limo Driver/narrator and Joan Rivers and Whoopi both played themselves, but does anyone have any guesses on the rest of the voice cast (such as who played airport announcer, "Pool Party!", or Madame Limota)?

Around the time it opened, I believe I read that the Madame Limota character was portrayed by Melissa Joan Hart.

Rocket Raccoon's, “Disneyland? That’s thematically inconsistent!” is unfortunately groan worthy. All the more bothersome to me because what should have been his response seems obvious: "Disneyland? This guy really has everything!"

I mean, or just not reference Disneyland at all. Imagine being on Big Thunder and having a cowboy figure say "Hey look! There's a Fantasyland!"

The weird self referential lines and queue with "easter eggs" that aren't really easter eggs cause they're in plain sight that cause more confusion than anything for the story really drag down Mission Breakout.

Not making any excuses for the flimsy storytelling here, but the official story for Mission: Breakout! is that The Collector brought his fortress (which moves? I guess?) to Disney California Adventure as he wants to show off his newest acquisitions (the Guardians) to as many visitors as possible. So canonically, Rocket seeing Disneyland out the window and making a reference to it is actually in story. Whether it's a good story or not, and whether that even matters or not, is another topic.

I usually feel the same way, but it is such a glaring break in immersion to open up to the real world in the midst of the ride. I do realize that they were supposed to build another screen in its place, but factors prevented it. I think the idea of the Collector opening up shop at DCA is an unsatisfactory explanation and along with the "thematic inconsistency" line, one designers seem forced into.

The problem with the line is that it acknowledges the elephant in the room in the hope that such bluntness can be funny in a self referential sense. There's a shadow of a chance that might have worked if it wasn't common knowledge that the ride was a synergistic rush job. In that case, I think it was the right idea to address the glimpse of the real world, but the dialogue should not call attention to its inherent criticisms. I feel that a line identifying Disneyland as part of the collection, while corny, could have been a lighthearted alterative and an easier pill to swallow. Of course, there are other possible deviations as well.

That would be a much better line and I’d go as far as saying had they thought of it, it probably would have made it into the attraction.
