summer's a flop

So, I had planned on trying to do a college summer program or the college program this summer at wdw, but they're not offering it. Does anyone know if they ever do? After finding this out, I saw something on a summer program at Disneyland and was to sign up, but when I called, they said it has been vanquished for the time being. How much does that suck? No programs for college students this summer at either Disney park. Oh well:confused:

Well, this would go under the employment forum, but I'm going to go ahead and answer.

The only way to do a summer program is to be an alumni of the program. That means taking a semester off from college and spending it working on either the Spring or Fall program. Advantage programs last through the summer.

There aren't that many summer positions and they decided to limit them to alumni only.

Actually, I thought they now only offered two six-month sessions in order to avoid dealing with three cast changes per year. Now they only have two CP sessions. It makes sense from a guest service stand point.

Advanced internships are mostly for alumni, but they do accept those who haven't interned at Disney before. They are for job training within a certain field like accounting, librarianship, etc. They also run in 6 month sessions, unless you're interested in working at Hilton Head, which I believe still has a summer program.

Good luck!

Has anyone reading this actually gone through the Disney College Experience? I am seriosly looking into going down there either next year or the year after (my Sophmore and Junior year in college) I have been on their website, but I would love to hear any first hand experiences you had there. Thanks.

While I did not, my sister-in-law did. She was very interested in retail management and human resources/recruiting as a career. She LOVED the experience she had and after graduation she moved to Orlando and she's now an assistant retail manager at WDW who will also be doing some recruiting for CP this year.

I hope others on here respond so you get a good idea of what it's like. I know the program has changed a lot since my SiL did it in 1995.

Good luck!

There are 4 programs for non-alumni:

Spring - January to May.
Spring Advantage - January to August.
Fall - August to late December or right after New Year's
Fall Advantage - May to late December or right after New Year's

The advanced internships can be found in almost any field. For most, you have to be in certain majors to qualify for them. They are all approximately 6 months (depending on when you go/leave) except for a select few (Hilton Head is one of them. Horticulture is for summer 2003 too).

I've done it. I'm currently a campus representative for my school. I recommend going as early as possible to leave yourself options of going back again.

Check out my website and email me or PM me if you have any more questions.

Actually It was your website that got me re-interested in going. It looks like so much fun and it seems perfect for me. I'm just trying to find out if my college will accept credits from there.
Keep up the great work on your website!!!

I had a few more pages ready to upload, but my computer's power box is screwed up so I can't even get on to transfer pages onto a disk and then upload from somewhere else.

As far as credit goes, talk to your Career Services center. Most schools have one that help with resumes, internships, jobs, grad school preparation. They could probally guide you in the right path.

Send me an email or PM and let me know where you go to school and some more about you. I may be able to help you in your search of getting credits.

Fall 1992--Attractions Host--Magic Kingdom--Jungle Cruise

I had a terrific time and partied a lot. Having Disney on my resume has been quite good for my career the last 10 years. I would recommend it to anyone. It is work, don't get me wrong about that. However, it is well worth it.

Fall 2001- DAK- Advanced Intern- Conservation Education

I too did the program- I was an advanced intern, and was NOT an alumni to the program. Several of my friends were alumni, and they kept saying how wonderful it was. I was a science major in college (have since graduated), so doing the regular college program for a semester would have put me behind in my coursework, as most of the regular internships aren't science-based. Then I discovered that there were science-based advanced internships, and I was ALL FOR IT! I had a blast- for me it was a real life-changing experience because it taught me a LOT about myself, and how things work in a professional setting. I would recommend the program to anyone- and if I could, I'd go back! :)

As for advanced vs. regular internships...I'd say it's all based on your academic track. My understanding is that the alumni who are interested in the more business/entertainment based advanced internships will have an advantage over non-alumni, and the advanced science-based internships are open to all. I did notice however, that a lot of alumni were really bitter about those of us who went straight to advanced internships, but that's all conditional.

Hope this helps a little!!

I am a freshman at Georgian Court College which is a small catholic girls college in central New Jersey. My major is Art/Early Childhood Education. (I don't know if your major matters when they select people to do this) What else do you need to know? (Besides that I am completly udderly obsessed with Disney and I want to marry Michael Eisners son so I can own the whole coperation someday):sohappy:

Thanks for your time turkey leg boy:wave:

Does anyone know if a part-time CM like me could get into an advanced internship? Do you HAVE to do the program in order to qualify, or can you get by the other way. I'm go to school while working at WDW, so I would really like to know if that is entirely possible.

There are some advanced internships that are available for everyone and not just alumni of the program. Most of these are in the sciences.

Majors don't really play any part in being accepted in my opinion.

The only thing where majors matter is for advanced internships. Most are major specific (must be a business major for business, science major for science, etc).
