Studio Room Dilemma

We are heading down to the World in about three weeks. We rented DVC points, and are staying at SSR in a studio. Since there is only three in our family we have always only needed studios. A few months ago we decided to let DS13 invite a friend which he did and now there is four. We are now realizing this was probably not a good idea. DW has obvious concerns about sharing a studio with one of DS friends. We have known this boy for about 9 years, but DW is still feeling a little awkward about the situation. Obviously we cant change the fact that he is going, so I was trying to figure out a way that maybe we could partition off the room somewhat, at least while we are sleeping. If anyone has any ideas they would be greatly appreciated. Upgrading I think would be difficult since we rented points, so I dont think that would be an easy option. Thanks for any help.

We had to do this once, not at Disney and ya you suddenly feel very aware of another teen about at beddie bye time. If you drive this would be easier. There are folding, sewing fabric cutting boards, much like a folding screen. They are generally 36" x 60" or 70". Buy I'd say 3 and you'd be set for around $30 dollars. We put them atop the dining table chairs and it gave us the privacy we needed to feel comfy with the situation. They are printed squares, like graph paper. You could easily spray them with the canned adhesive and roll out some colored wrapping paper over it, so it isn't ugly. During the day you can fold up and put in closet. If you are flying you can ups them and then dump them at the end of trip. I'm going to try and give you the link to Amazon...

I would call Disney and tell them the situation and see if you can add on a room that is joined by a door...this will be very awkard in my mind and I would rather pay cash for the other room and add on to the restoration than have to be uncomfortable...not just you but his sons friend is going to be uncomfortable as well.

I can definitely see why this would feel/be awkward. For sure call Disney and see if there are privacy screens that can be provided or rented. Or even see if you can change your room??

The OP is staying DVC. Adding on the room next to the studio would require adding the 1br next door, and going into a 2br environment.

Since they rented their points, I don't think there is much they can do in terms of room changes. The reservation is technically held by the person who they rented it from, so they can't do anything to it themselves. Even if the points owner was willing to try to rebook it (no idea what their contract covers), the owner would need to have enough points to make the jump from a studio to a 1br.

Maybe ship a pup tent down? Move the coffee table out of the way and set up the tent on the floor for the kids? Or maybe rig together some PVC that you can then hang a shower curtain from? Would need to ship it down and back, but might give you more height than the cardboard dividers mentioned above.

According to somebody on the touring plans blog comments who recommended them, these $31 (+ $18 shipping, gulp!) cardboard privacy screens can be ordered and shipped to your resort so they'll be waiting for you when you get there: http://www.privatespacers.com/

It's not the cheapest option, but if you're not driving and can't bring your own "privacy set-up," it's an idea.

Also, for a more "low tech" solution, you could turn the sleeper sofa 90 degrees so your son and his friend will have a great forward view out the window, but your bed will be behind them and not within easy viewing.

I am a DVC member and you can definately get the owner to call and try to combine the points and cash for a 1 bedroom...again I would just call Disney it never hurts to ask...Four people in one studio is a lot but if one of them is not family it could get a little awkward...But its all how you guys feel and the child coming along.

Before you call Disney also call the owner or email to see if they have points available to rent a one bedroom...Since you staying at SSR it may be easy to find a 1 bedroom since its a large resort just for DVC. If you were staying at BCV or BWV I would say it would be diffcult in October due to the F&W but you should be good at SSR. ITS WORTH A TRY :)

studios are definitely small... at least at the beach club.

why would it be awkward? I can't see you doing anything different with a friend or without a friend there. I would hope you wouldn't be changing in front of your son anyway.

Although a nice meal at Ohana might make you question four people in that room... specifically around the bathroom area hahaha

LOL - I just assumed they didn't want to feel "exposed" if the bedclothes and jammies were shifting in the night, or have the boys taking Youtube-bound videos of Mom and Dad, drooling or snoring as they slept. I'm not sure what other need there would be for a privacy screen in the room, since the bathroom is right there for clothes-changing... and anything else they wish to keep private. ;)

Thanks for everyone's response. Knew I could count on you all for help. I don't think we will be going for an upgrade. It really won't be a horrible situation for anyone, so we aren't looking at dropping a lot of extra money to solve this. It really is no big deal for me or the boys. DW just feels a little funny with the extra kid. But this friend has slept at our house a bazillion times so there is a lot of familiarity with everyone. I think I may go with putting up a little barrier for sleeping.I got some great ideas from this thread. And no, it is not for what some of you are thinking.:)

The bathroom situation could get rough. We are not doing Ohana, but we are doing Biergarten. Brats and sauerkraut. might be a rough morning.

Send the two boys down to the main pool/changing shower area in the morning, they can shower and get ready there while you and your wife get ready in the room. It will be good Practice for the boys on Dorm life on down the road. Call them on the cell phone or meet them at the pool when everyone is ready for breakfast or parks.

Having our teens a boy and girl in same room, we've learned how to make it work.

Love a little Disney every day!! ;)
Good luck with whatever you decide!! :). I love SSR!! I personally don't like renting points and just pay for the DVC resorts as they are usually included in all the special discounts and such, and also if your a paying guest not on points Mousekeeping comes every day like any other hotel. If you stay on points they only come once your whole stay unless you pay the pricey fees to add for daily Mousekeeping. Also if you need to change something or upgrade it's a lot easier if your paying yourself. :)

I'm with you on this one. Teen boys are teen boys - son or not. But I guess just the thought of sleeping in the same room as a "stranger" could be weird.

But the bathroom thing - yes! 4 people to 1 hotel bathroom can quickly become a problem, especially after Disney Gluttony!

The cash/points would be awfully tight. If I remember from my member literature, you can only pay cash for 15 points a year. Not sure if you can jump from Studio to 1br for that little.
