Japanese animation outfit Studio Ghibli, which has a distribution deal with Disney, is rumored to be closing up shop. Already, folks on social media have been sounding the death knell.

Sad if true. While I'm not big on most anime myself, I appreciate the craftsmanship that they put into they're films.

Sad Times, Sad Times....if this is true, we will have lost an amazing company that I like to consider the "Japanese Pixar". As a fan of anime and their culture, Hayao Miyazaki is one of the greats!

Can we go yet?

Here's a nice video showcasing some of Ghiblis films to some of its beautiful music. They still have one tv show in the works, but film wise I don't see much happening. It's mostly been the context that's been driving people away, I think. Even Arriety had some magical element. Something like When Marnie was There seems like Slice of Life, and a child would probably want to watch a movie like- dare I say it- planes than Marnie. Who knows how long this period of rethinking their products will last? It's somewhat like the dark days of Disney, remember the 80's? Maybe they need to return to their roots. Stories like Nausicaa, with strong imposing themes and fantastic, almost strange visuals. Or more simple- like Totoro or Kiki.
