Studio Ghibli and Disney present PONYO!!

I don't know how wide their audience is on this site, but I am personally a huge fan of the combined work that Disney has done with Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki, turning out some AMAZING films like Academy Award winning Spirited Away, and my personal favourite, Howl's Moving Castle. For me, they bring back the magic that still captivates me in the classic Disney movies with stories that I think the new ones fail to capture as well (Sorry to anyone reading that if offended, but I'm far from a fan of newer Disney films and prefer to stick with the oldies).

Anyway, it looks like Studio Ghibli and Disney have combined forces again for a new film based on a Dutch fairytale called Ponyo. It tells the story of, according to Yahoo! Movies, a "
[SIZE=-1]5-year-old boy named Sosuke and his relationship with a goldfish princess named Ponyo who longs to become human," and features the voice talents of big names like Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, and Liam Neeson amongst others.

Seems like ever since Spirited Away got serious recognition, Miyazaki's films have been getting bigger and bigger name actors, which is actually pretty cool, I think. They definitely deserve recognition, after all.

The film is set to release in North American theatres next Friday - 14th August. And I can tell you, if it comes anywhere even CLOSE to where I live, I will definitely not be missing it.

Any other comments anyone would like to make? Please, no spoilers for anyone that may have seen the Japanese release of the film. The trailer looks wonderfully magical, by the way.

Even just general Miyazaki praise is always nice, hehe :p

I can't wait!

On the subject, two of my favorite Ghibli Films aren't spoken of often, "Porco Rosso" and "The Cat Returns". I love those movies....All of their films are so amazing. Masterpieces of film making without argument, and it's such a shame that more people (especially around here.) ignore it because it's Animated, or from Japan.

I really want to see "The Cat Returns," actually. Its related to "Whisper of the Heart," right? That wasn't the best film ever, but the storyline was cute, and I did like the segments about the Baron, and I believe that is what the film you mentioned is about. Or at least, I think so.

And I completely agree with you!! Just two nights ago I tried to get a friend to watch "Howl's Moving Castle," because I KNOW she will love the storyline, and she refused simply because she said it looked too much like anime. I told her it wasn't like they were going to be eating ramen the entire time and fighting with Pokemon, because I know that's the general stereotype, but apparently wasn't convincing enough.

Mostly, people don't know what they're missing because they're unwilling to even give the films a chance.

Anyways, you HAVE to see The Cat Returns. It has nothing to do with Whisper of the Heart, it's a completely different story, with different characters, just that the Baron is the main character-who is very cool and incredibly awesome, and voiced in English by The Princess Bride's Cary Elwes. It's REALLY good.

I think I may have talked myself into watching it again soon...

(My review from the Movies Movies Movies thread)

whole Family came out to see Ponyo last night...absolutely WONDERFUL. Every Studio Ghibli film is just a miraculous treat for the mind and soul. Just every shot, line of dialogue, and emotion they convey with their animation and the soul they put into these tales is just moves me, and you all know how bitter and curmudgeonly I am.

While Spirited Away remains the best of their films (And the best Motion Picture ever created in my opinion) Ponyo is still an amazing delight and makes me feel just as captivated as I was when I first saw classics like "My Neighbor Totoro" and "Porco Rosso"...

As I recall, our own Lee once said something along the lines of "Anyone who doesn't get Adventurer's Club is a lower life form, whom I don't socialize with."

Same for me, and anyone who doesn't get or appreciate the amazing films made by Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli!

 :sohappy:
