Stranger Things: Hawkins ‘85

Hold on to your Eggos, because Stranger Things now has its very own land in my miniature theme park, Worlds of Hollywood! After watching all 4 seasons of ST I decided it was worthy to have its own land. So pop open a can of New Coke as we journey to Hawkins on July 4th, 1985–the same day the finale of Stranger Things 3 occurs.

Hawkins

My adapted version of Hawkins contains the Palace Arcade, a music store, a theatre, and a diner, where you can get eggos galore. The 80s were relatively recent in terms of architectural and human history, so I tried to make Hawkins feel like the 80s, with its emphasis on bold, neon colors.

The Mall

Starcourt Mall is home to various stores and eateries like Scoops Ahoy and a Chinese takeout place. Starcourt Mall itself is a redressed Gwinett Place Mall in Georgia, a dead mall from the 80s. As such, Starcourt has brutalist architecture (which was popular in the 80s) and neon which I replicated. This mall is also home to the land’s star attraction.

The Attraction

Stranger Things: Battle of the Demo-Basilisk is a thrilling dark ride that shoots you along a track sideways through the walls of Starcourt and directly into—The Upside Down. The attraction’s story is that instead of the Mind Flayer, the Demo-Basilisk has come through the portal made by the Soviets. All of this is explained in the pre show inside the electronics store. In the first scene, Dustin and Lucas accidentally send you into the Upside Down via the mall’s secret transport system within the mall’s walls used by the Soviets. Then you are shot out of the UD, into the ride’s battle scene with Eleven fighting the Demo-Basilisk and winning the battle without losing her powers.

I hope that you enjoyed my take on Stranger Things and the 80s in my latest creation!
