Staying at The Dolphin, please tell me the pros/cons

As a school employee, I am hoping to get a low rate (cheaper than a Disney Deluxe) and be able to stay at the Dolphin in May 2011 :sohappy:. I know nothing about this resort . Please tell me all the pros and cons when staying here. Also please let me know how the Disney internal transportation works from park to park (good/bad). How much would I be paying for brkfst here. I plan to use my DDP for lunch counter service in the parks and table service dinners (not at The Dolphin).

I've been to WDW 13 times and I've stayed at the Dolphin during each of the past five trips, plus several times before that. I've also stayed offsite and at a number of other resort hotels. My mother is a travel agent so we would usually stay anywhere if she had a decent incentive, but without any special deals she generally also defers to the Dolphin. Anyway, I'll be back in November with several first-timers - we considered getting a suite somewhere b/c of our group size but ended up booking several rooms at the Dolphin after they saw my photos from past trips.

The pros for me are (in no specific order):

1.) Price/Value - I have a Starwood corporate membership so I build starpoints and can usually get a comparatively good rate using that, my AAA membership, or whatever promotion they have going on.

2.) Location - I love being able to walk around the World Showcase at night while sampling food and drinks at each pavilion, watch IllumiNations and then walk back to the resort along the Boardwalk. There are often "street performers" out there, plus you can stop in at a number of stores, bars, or restaurants so it's generally a great atmosphere at night (or anytime!). I also like getting up in the morning and being able to either walk or take the boats to Epcot/HS. You can catch the buses to MK/AK right out front - they run frequently and if you catch them at the right time they won't be crowded either. Finally, you can request a balcony that faces Epcot so you can actually sit out there and watch the fireworks - they will charge you a premium for this if you book in advance but I've gotten free upgrades at check-in (which is also an SPG benefit).

3.) Pool - the pool seems more relaxing/less crowded than the other resorts, but that could partially be because I've made the past few trips in Oct./Nov./Dec. It's not as large, and it doesn't have any theming, but our travel party doesn't include children and none of us really mind.

4.) Food - I thought about whether to put this as a pro or con, but ultimately the food has always been good/great so it ended up on the pro side. I've eaten at the Fountain, Cabana Bar, Pikabu and either Fresh/Garden Grove, or maybe both (and I've had drinks at Bluezoo if that counts). On the other hand, there are people that will go to WDW and say "I can't wait to have the Tonga Toast at Kona," or the Kitchen Sink at Beaches & Cream, or whatever else... and for me there's not really a *signature item* (or items) at any of the resort restaurants. I've eaten there because it's convenient and reasonably priced, but not out of any specific desire to eat at those places. However, I've heard Shula's is pretty good so maybe I'll give that a try on the upcoming trip. Anyway, you mentioned that you plan to eat in the parks, so it should be just fine for your purposes!

Cons:

1.) I think they offer a dining plan for the resort restaurants, but it's not the DDP.

2.) No DME - right now I'm looking at spending approx. $300 on a rental car, which will be used to make several trips to/from the airport (travel companions arriving on various dates), and trips into Tampa and Orlando so the cost in my case is justified (I think). Other than that, the car sits in the Dolphin parking lot, which you also have to pay for.

3.) You're truly staying at a Sheraton on the Disney property, compared to a Disney hotel so it's slightly less "magical"... with that being said, I love the "heavenly beds" and the rooms are all very nice, as is the entire resort.

I think that covered your questions on transportation and breakfast as well - as far as breakfast prices, we usually get cereal, fruit or some of the hot menu items and I don't think the price has ever exceeded $10-15. Anyway, let me know if you think of anything else and enjoy your stay!

I stayed here once in 2008 as a school employee also. The pros are definitely the price and location, especially compared to the other deluxe resorts nearby. Also, the beds are some of the most comfortable beds on the WDW property as well.

The con is the theming isn't as immersive as other WDW properties.

It was my understanding that you could get the early and evening emh's and use the transportation but that you couldn't use the disney dining plan. Also if you drive or have your own vehicle you must pay for parking each day...but the teacher/school employee discount is great.

We have stayed at the Boardwalk and the Yacht Club and I would love to go for the Swan or Dolphin..our room at the Yacht Club was less than stellar...but we loved the resort. Also the transportation isn't too bad..you can walk to Epcot, short boat trip to the studios. The biggest drawback we had was at Animal Kingdom where there is only one stop for all five resorts..Swan, Dolphin, Boardwalk, Yacht & Beach. It took us a few bus loads to get home on evening.

I've stayed at the Swan a handful of time & the Dolphin once. (We usually stay at a moderate when we go to WDW.) Here's my pro's & cons.

1. Location: The location is great. You are close to the Boardwalk, and in walking distance to both Epcot & the Studios if you choose to do that.

2. Price: You can sometimes get really good discounts for these properties if you fall into the right catergories. I think they always have the teacher discount & I want to say there's a government employee discount too. Florida residents can catch good deals sometimes too.

3. The resorts themselves are nice and I would say that they are on about an equal level of a Disney Deluxe. The rooms I have stayed in were always nice and comfortable. (Although, I will say, they do lack a little of the Disney magic that the other hotels have.)

Cons

1. If you drive a car, there is a daily parking fee. I want to say this is $11 per day. (Not 100% on the rate as it's been about a year since I've stayed there.)

2. There is a mandatory $10 per day resort fee. (I personally have a problem with resort fees & the hotels that use them. I think it's sneaky. I'd rather pay a higher room rate and be done with it. Normally the things listed as being included with a resort fee are things that I never use.)

3. No charging privledges with your room key expect at the Swan & Dolphin. Can't use your room key to buy anything outside these 2 hotels.

Food: I can't really say pro or con on this subject. Husband & I eat at Kimono's often - We love it! I've eaten at Blue Zoo twice; once the food was awesome, once not so great. Service was good though. Shula's is good, but it's no different than Shula's anywhere else. If I want a steak at WDW, I'd probably go to the Yachtsman. Haven't eaten at any of the other resturants at these 2 hotels as the prices seemed a little high for what they were offering. With the Boardwalk & Epcot just a short walk down the way, it didn't really matter.

Can't comment on a pro/con regarding the DDP or DME - I've never used either of these things. (I have the Tables in Wonderland card & I know it's good at Kimono's but not sure of anywhere else.)

Bottom line if you get a good rate, stay there, but be sure to factor in the resort fee & parking fee. You may find that your rate isn't as good as you thought it was. Have fuin!

I think everything has been about covered here, but to add my two cents...

the beds are the most comfy I've stayed in and the room are so nice. when i stayed at the dolphin our window faced the magic kingdom (it's pretty far away) but at night you could watch their fireworks from our room (again, it was pretty far away but still kinda cool)

i loved staying there and would again. only con for us was the daily resort fee and the parking per day fee.

Pros:

location!!

comfy beds

Cons:

No DDP - will NEVER book just for this reason

No Magical Express - another HUGE con for me

The things in my cons are enough to keep me from ever staying here again, even though we stayed on our honeymoon and had a great time - that was eons ago before they added these fabulous perks!!

You'll really need to take a look at pricing before making your final decision. If you are driving you'll have to tack on that parking fee each day. You will also have to figure in the resort fee as well...although that will be in your total bill paid upfront but not figured into the teachers rate. If your flying you won't have access to DME so you'll have some cost w/getting to and from the resort. You also won't have the DDP however, if you can get that $150 rate or there abouts it may be cheaper for you to get that deluxe feel and closeness to the parks and pay for your meals out of pocket. We stayed at the Yacht Club and didn't do the dining plan. We are annual passholders as well..but we didn't buy the Tables in Wonderland either. For us the quality of food and service the last few trips hasn't warrented enough sit down meals to make the TIW much of a value for us.

I LOVE the Dolphin and I think it's very top notch quality.

1.) GREAT VIEWS- The time I stayed at the Dolphin with a Florida resident discount in a standard view I ended up with a view of the BWV, a bit of Epcot's World Showcase, and the entire DHS park. Tower of Terror was practically a few hundred feet away, and you can really see into the Fantasmic area. It was amazing. I only wish I could've stayed longer :(

2.) The heavenly beds are heavenly. Most comfortable bed I've ever slept on. Ever.

3.) Very elegant feeling. And you'll still feel like you're on Disney grounds with the Boardwalk a short walk away and a fairly large gift shop near the lobby.

4.) Price is very reasonable.

Cons:

1.) You'll almost feel like you're too underclass to be here. You'll stick out like a sore thumb if you are bringing up pillows and a box fan in no suitcase (guilty)

2.) The rooms seemed a little small.

Both the Swan and Dolphin have a $9 per day parking fee. There is also a $10 per day fee for the paper, local calling, access to the health/fitness center, two bottles of water and Internet Access I believe. It is a mandatory fee.

Make sure you get your water. Besides the paper, that is all we got for our $10 per day and we leave the do not disturb on our door most of the time so we never got water replaced but I would call at the end of the day to make sure I got it.

Consider the Swan. Instead of two twin beds you get two queens. The hallways are much shorter too. We have stayed at both for about 25 nights now. I would say 20 of those were free (using American Express Starwood Credit Card points, you get one free night on your 1st purchase using the card) and the other (5) at highly discounted rates.

By the way, they will ask if you have a car.

I am considering the Starwood AmEx for the abililty to stay at Dolphin/Swan with points. Can anyone tell me how many points you need for one night at these resorts? I greatly appreciate it!
