SSE Question?

I was told yesterday that SSE has a rain water collection device on the top. That is about as much information as I got on this subject. If this was true I'm not really even sure what it would be used for.

Does any EPCOT history/engineer fans ever hear about this?

Yep....And it's all through the building. Rain water is collected under the triangular tiles and funneled to WS Lagoon.:wave:

The gutter/trough system generally forms a ring around the "equator" of SSE behind the silver triangle panels. There's a space of a couple feet between the outer silver triangles and the inner sphere that's the actual weather-proof surface of SSE.

There was one time I remember there must've been either a leak or a stopped-up drain in the gutter because there was a single stream of water falling down onto the east-side walkway past SSE.

There are three access doors around the sphere so maintenance people can get to the gutters. There was a photo posted here on the forums from the time SSE was closed for its big refurb where one of the access doors was left open at night and you could see the inside lights shining out through the cracks around the triangles.

Yeah, that was a fun thread. :D Do you know of some search terms for it? I'd like to see it again.

I did a search for "SSE gutter access" and it was a third thread on the list:

One of the two photos showing the light coming from behind the tiles is no longer available, though. But there's also links by Martin of photos showing the access doors open before they're covered up by the silver triangle panels.

Ahh, if only some lights could be placed back there permanently. Imagine how cool SSE would look if the individual triangles were outlined. :D

I've often thought of the same thing, save for that I would put Strobes back there.:D

And it is possible....I've asked.:drevil::lol:
