The show is an absolute joy and nails it's premise extremely well. I was worried about the space-suburbs not feeling like Star Wars but I think it fits and enjoy the intrigue about its origins.

I'm already thinking maybe it's a planet under the control of the empire or something, which the residents do not know, and is why it's such a mysterious planet / has such high security? It felt very dystopian to me.

Palpatine didn't like or trust the Empire which is why he had contingency plans in case the Empire "failed" him. I think their planet may be such a contingency plan, a sort of control group as he conducted his experimental Empire. Seeing how the sky looks I'm wondering if they're actually out in the unknown regions.
