So i was in Ocean City, MD this past week where they have your typical beach town amusement parks and at one called they Jolly Roger they were advertising a new area of their water park called Splash Mountain. now it wasnt even a mountain, im not even sure exactly what was named that, but i was just wondering how they were able to call it that since i figured Disney would have securly held the rights to the name Splash Mountain. does anyone know anything about this?

I don't think Disney actually own the rights to the actual name "Splash Mountain" but they have copyrights to their logo of their attraction. I've ridden a Space Mountain before in another non-Disney park as well but the lettering/logo was different. I think this might clear up a few things.

ok that makes sense. i also just thought it was silly because nothing about the attraction even involved a mountain

A good thing for Disney is, regardless of where you are, when one mentions Splash or Space, almost everyone associates it with Disney. :D

My opinion and experience.

I think that Splash is not copywrited but I think that Disney should copywrite the name of the ride and the logo.I know that they have all ready done that for the logo.

They cannot copyright the phrase, "Splash Mountain." It's far too generic. The logotype is, however, trademarked and I'm sure it's copyright, as well, but I can't find it on the Copyright Office website.

Beat me to it. However, most logos are not copyrightable, either. They aren't "works of authorship." However, Disney has the registered circle up for the Splash Mountain logo and, oddly, on Splash Mountain itself. So, they may have registered it as a trademark generally now. Keep an eye on it to see if the Splash Mountain name sticks around on that small park (however, since it is an area and not an attraction, Disney will have a tougher time arguing confusion).

Jolly Roger.... that takes me back (when I was young my family would vacation there in OC,MD) Like the above poster said, I don't think they can copyright the name, just the logo. Just think of how many other Haunted mansions, or Jungle cruise's there are in this world
