Song of the South, featuring the stories of Uncle Remus "Brer Rabbit and friends" has not been released since the early 1980's. The movie is not going to be released anytime soon because it features politically incorrect pictures and themes from our past that are not acceptable today.

"Disneyland USA : Special Historical Broadcasts"

It's one of the four "Walt Disney TREASURES" collectors' DVD sets. If you don't already own them you may have noticed them in the store; they come in collectible tins with a serial number stamped in them (150,000 were made.)

The Disneyland USA DVD(s) has some great original animation and sound of Brear Rabbit, Fox, and Bear.

You can't purchase it. (at least no that I know of) Disney has not released it because many "groups" have complained that it contains racial slurs and wanted the movie banned.

Song of the South

Here it is on VHS. You can easily track down a used (second hand) copy, but be prepared to pay a few bucks extra for it.

It's very easy to find on PAL format on any onlline auction site. you will pay aprox $50 US and then must have it converted to US format....

Disney just needs to say to heck with the "politically correct" whiners and release this Fantastic film on video and DVD for those of us in the U.S.

If you are offended by this movie DON'T BUY IT and let those of us who want it, get it.,

'Tis a sad, sad day when you cannot buy a Disney related video due to it's content. :(

I remember them playing it on the Disney Channel like 10-12 years ago. I can remember watching that after school! Oh well...

Have ya'll tried E-Bay?

Here in Brasil this film is presented on television every year. I am almost tired of watching this....Didn't know it can't be played on US.

You can buy it in PAL format on Ebay. But it is very expensive. Then you have to pay to get it converted which would probably cost a lot too. Not really worth it (even though I would love a copy).

I got a bootleg copy of song of the south at a cheap cheesy flea market for 10-$15 (on the table next to kung foo movies with extra gore). So just keep your eyes open.

Come to think of it I never opened the video. I hope they gave me the right one.

If any of you are lucky enough to have a Laserdisc player, once in a GREAT while you can find it on ebay.

I was fortunate enough to snag a copy of the movie on Laserdisc a couple years ago. It is also an NTSC format laserdisc so no problems with viewing it on my TV. Granted it was expensive, but well worth it! Now I don't have to worry about picture fading or the VCR eating my tape.

It looks really great on laserdisc !!!

I have the Disneyland DVD set. You're right, it does have some of the Song of the South animation it. Specifically, it has just one of the cartoon segments (Brer Rabbit's laughing place). And it is in black and white (the televsion limit at the time), which is a big difference from the glorious Technicolor original.

As these sets cost around $25.00 retail, could be hard to find because they were a limited edition, and only feature about 8 minutes of the movie (justa guess), one might be better off to invest in purchasing one on ebay and having it converted.

Anyway, back to the original post.........

It is quite odd that Disney still features this movie prominently in it's parks. We have a full blown attraction based on the movie and you see all the Brer characters in costume walking around the parks and in the parades.

Plus, I noticed on one episode of House of Mouse (I think it was the premier episode), Mickey looks out into the audience and makes the comment (paraphrasing here) "And I don't want any trouble out of you Brer Bear or Fox." The camera then shows Brer Bear and Brer Fox sitting at a table with Fox holding Brer Rabbit up by the ears and Bear holding his trademark baseball bat about to clonk Rabbit on the head. Or should I say, "Why don't we just knock his head clean off??" (those who have the movie know that quote). :)

For Disney to not release this movie on the grounds of it "offending" certain people, they sure do use the imagery in a lot of things don't they??

Well, it is a good movie, although some people can be ofended by this....As I said before, here in Brasil this movie is played almost every year on TV, speacially next to Xmas....I would tape and send for you guys on US, but unfortunantly it is played on a portuguese version. Anyway, Splash Montain ride is very similar to the movie.....what really matters in the movie is shown on Splash Montain. Guess it would be cool if Disney Studios did a remake of this movie in a none offending version and presented it on Disney Channel wouldn't it?

Anybody looked on the file-sharing services, like the Kaaza, for this movie? When I get home later tonight, I will see if they are on there. :D
