LOS ANGELES (KP International) - Director Steven Spielberg is widely considered an Oscar frontrunner for "Munich," his hard-hitting examination of the aftermath of the assassinations of 11 Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympics, currently in theatres. But the master helmsman who also gave us "Jaws," "E.T.," "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "Schindler's List" is next considering a much lighter project... Lighter than air, in fact Spielberg is in talks to develop a remake of the 1964 Disney classic "Mary Poppins" Based on PL Travers' beloved children's book and recently adapted as a stage musical for London's West End, the original film version of "Mary Poppins" starred Julie Andrews as the titular London nanny whose multitude of magical skills include the ability to fly (via umbrella) Andrews was named Best Actress at the 1964 Academy Awards for her portrayal of Poppins ________ Van costarred as Cockney chimneysweep Bert The West End show's director, Sir Richard Eyre, says that he has had several discussions with Spielberg about shifting the production from stage to screen "It will be hard to outdo the original," Eyre opines, "but kids love the story and I'm sure that the remake will be a real success"

Steven Spielberg's rep Marvin Levy has debunked rumors that the director is developing a film version of "Mary Poppins".

"I never heard of this and couldn't imagine Steven ever doing a remake of a classic - and a [Walt Disney] classic at that. There's a Broadway show from Disney but nothing involving us in any way" said Levy this weekend to fansite Spielberg Films

"Mary Poppins", based on the stories by P.L. Travers and the 1964 Walt Disney film will begin performance on Broadway at the New Amsterdam Theatre (Broadway at West 42nd Street) in October 2006.

Ya know, that really would be kinda cool. Spielberg is a great director who knows what he's doing. So, I'm interested to see what the final product would be like. Besides, Spielburg has said that he always wanted to direct a musical.

um... read up a couple of posts... this was a false rumor according to Spielburgs people. They released that it was false and it was sent out the day before this thread even started.
