Spending Money

Hi, This is the first time we will be taking the kids to Disney, they are 12 and 9. Thankfully, we were able to get an incredible price on our flights which we purchased right away, as well as the park hoppers for both Disney and Universal. We also reserved through the Disney experience the hotel, however we opted out of the Dining plan because it just didn't fit with our family. So I was wondering would anyone be able to give me an idea of how much spending money i would need to take.

Family of four? Plan $500 for souvenirs, and at least $1K for dining and snacks unless you plan to only eat at Quick Service restaurants.

We are staying 5 nights. do they sell refillable cups in the parks for water throughout the day? I had someone state they did but I thought I read that was only with Dining plans.

They sell a non-refillable park mug that's pretty nice, but expensive at $9.50 (give or take). It's very well made, and could last a few years with daily use. You can get water cups just about everywhere, but there are no refill options in any of the parks. The resort refill mugs do not work in the parks. I usually take my park mug with me and refill it with whatever I get.

Sorry for all of the questions but would you suggest eating in the parks or out of the parks? Ive heard the restaurants at the parks are very expensive.

It depends. The table service restaurants go from bad to great so check the reviews. Some are two dollar signs, some are four. You tend to need reservations 180 days in advance for the really great (and most expensive) restaurants.

If you want to save money, there are quick service restaurants. These are counter style and all under $20 per person. Check the reviews before deciding on them though because some of them are really bad. There are a few real diamonds in the rough, except at Magic Kingdom.

Resort dining is always a great option, but it fits above as well as they offer both styles. We used to go to the parks just to eat, but it's been years since that's been an option for us due to price and quality.

If you go offsite, you can find decent options but the cost will be time, and it will be significant. Figure an average of 30 minutes each way, but it could take more time than that based on traffic and where you are in the park at the time.

As an aside, if you plan to go all out the way my family does, you might end up spending a bit more.

We tend to do one character dinner or signature dinner per night, but do quick service breakfast, lunch and snacks. For a family of 4 for 6 nights, I expect to spend $1500. Souvenirs about $800 - the sweatshirts and t-shirts are crazy expensive.

Just a tip. Even if you don't plan on buying any t-shirts or souvenirs, you'll buy a few t-shirts and a few souvenirs. I've found it's impossible to get out of WDW without buying something.

Right. I went to MK for one day by myself last April. No kids whining for toys, etc. No plans to actually buy anything.

Probably spent $30 on pins, $25 on a ball cap and another $60 on a hoodie when I got cold that night.
