Spectrum/Disney dispute, channel blockage

Thought this deserved its own thread:
In a significant carriage dispute, Disney’s TV channels, including ABC, ESPN, FX and Freeform, have gone dark on Charter Spectrum, the country’s second-largest cable TV provider, with 14.7 million subscribers.

The blackout happened at a critical time, with ESPN’s networks broadcasting both the U.S. Open tennis tournament (in the middle of Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz’s match), as well as a college football game between Utah and the University of Florida. Spectrum customers in the country’s top two media markets of New York and Los Angeles are impacted by the blackouts.

Tonight at the Marine Room lounge we were watching the US Open replays on ESPN2 just fine on a non-Spectrum setup. I can only imagine the outrage had the US Open not been broadcast this weekend.

Interesting reading over on cordcutters. Looks like Charter is considering to swapping over to being an ISP and selling streaming bundles instead of staying a linear cable delivery outlet.

I had predicted this could start happening in a post last year in the Streaming thread......

.....And longer term I suspect as traditional cable goes away there will be some smart company that will offer a "Bundle" of streaming services all together for one cost, I've mentioned this before.

If it happens, I suspect you'll start seeing a bunch of them do that shortly after including Comcast, once one domino falls.....

Many folks have been saying for years that was about the only way they would return to "cable".

I won't go back to "cable" until they will let me pick just the 10 or 15 cable channels I want for 50 bucks or less, and be able to ignore the rest without paying them for that privilege. Or just have individual channels/networks available for whatever the free market thinks they are worth; 3 to 12 bucks per channel/network. You could build your bundle with 10 oddball or minor channels for 30 bucks, build a bundle with only 3 popular channels for 35 bucks, a mixed bundle of a dozen networks for 55 bucks, etc.

That could be the death knell for some news networks in particular, but it's the future.

I guess I lost ABC and Disney Channel forever! 😭 And I’m not being funny! I’m serious! I’m on a Los Angeles County!

I’ll never get ABC and Disney Channel back! I lost them forever!😭
First of all, you can pretty much watch all the same content without having Spectrum using the D+/Hulu Bundle.

Second of all, this happens every couple of years on some cable system around the country. It'll be settled and things will come back just like it was previously.

You need to stop being overly dramatic every time there is a negative story out there.

I’m sorry. At least I’m not being over dramatic about the Hollywood strike this time.😏 Also, in my defense, I blame the stupid pandemic for making me acting like this.
Update: I’ve reread the article, and I thought it’s Spectrum that’s suing Disney. But it’s the consumers. After reading that article, I don’t blame them. So both Spectrum and Disney needs to hurry up and accept the deal so I can have ABC and Disney Channel again! However, I’m afraid it’s beyond my control.🙄

"Disney has seen a 60% jump in Hulu + Live TV subscriptions relative to internal expectations since a carriage impasse with Charter began, according to figures provided to Deadline by a Disney spokesperson.

Last Thursday, 18 of Disney’s cable networks and eight ABC stations went dark on Charter’s Spectrum service in one of the most contentious and consequential TV carriage disputes in memory.

Hulu, which has been under Disney’s operational control since 2019, launched its bundled TV package in 2017. It has steadily grown to become one of the top providers in the U.S., with 4.3 million subscribers. That ranks a bit behind YouTube TV among internet-delivered bundles, but most of the online players are actually growing at a time when cable and satellite distributors are rapidly shedding customers."

You do have some control, you can use Hulu bundled with D+ instead and get pretty much all the same content.

So if you're really afraid of losing access to ABC and Disney Channel content do something about it.

I hope Roberts gives this to the Hulu arbitrator.

Sorry, but it’s up to my parents. I have DisneyPlus, but I don’t know if I want to do a bundle.

Go down to Target or WalMart and buy a $20 digital antenna and you'll get ABC back for free.

When I got rid of cable as I was moving from OC I did that, and the KABC signal comes in loud and clear and in sparkling HD. I was in Villa Park, about 30 miles from Mount Wilson and the digital antenna farm up there. If you are in LA County you are even closer to Mount Wilson and will get all the local stations for free in top notch HD.

That’s up for my parents.

Bug them about it.

You have a dinner conversation to use tonight. Look up the mileage distance from your house to Mount Wilson, do some antenna price comparisons online now, and hit your dad up with a gonzo sales pitch.

And compliment your mom on the meal.

Good news! We’ve added Hulu TV and we’ve got ABC back. Disney Channel…..sort of? We’ll, at least there’s DisneyPlus. I feel a little bit better.
