Special diet needs and DDP...tips/$

We're going to use the dining plan on our upcoming trip. Our 4 year old has a serious nut allergy. I'm planning on calling each resturant the day ahead to see what can be done to help us out (talk to chef...different foods...etc.) I've heard Disney is very good about this sort of thing.

Here's my question. I know that tips are included with the plan but when you take advantage of some special accomodation like this (weather by choice or necessity) are you expected to tip or pay extra? I'm not trying to be cheap. Just want to get opinions and info on this. I don't think we should have to pay extra for a different desert, for example, if our son has to order from the kid menu selections and they are all things he can't eat. Do we need to pay extra if they make something different for him? Is this even an option? Would you all tip extra for this?

Any input would be great...thanks!

All WALT DISNEY WORLD Resort table service restaurants that accept Reservations can accommodate special dietary needs (such as allergies to gluten or wheat, shellfish, soy, lactose or milk, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, or eggs) if requested at least 72 hours in advance by calling 407-WDW-DINE. You will then be given a special phone number for each location to call at least 48 hours or more in advance to discuss your special dietary needs with a Chef from the location. When needed, our Chefs have been known to create specially created dishes not normally found on the menu to accommodate a Guest's needs.

All WALT DISNEY WORLD Resort table service restaurants that accept Reservations offer balanced menu choices and can accommodate lifestyle dietary needs (such as no sugar added, low fat, low sodium, vegetarian or vegan). If a lifestyle menu request is needed, Guests should advise a Cast Member at the time of dining of the request and they will be happy to assist. For Dinner Shows, a 24-hour notice is required for any lifestyle menu request.

Most WALT DISNEY WORLD Resort table service restaurants that accept Reservations can accommodate Kosher needs if requested at least 24 hours in advance by calling 407-WDW-DINE. We do require a credit card to guarantee this order, but will not charge the card unless the Priority Seating is canceled within 24 hours or the party is a no-show.

When you use the Disney Dining Plan your gratuity is already included. Your Waiter will receive 18% of your total food bill, so remember if you like your waiter, order big! If you choice to leave an additional tip, you may but it is not necessary or expected.

Also, you should never feel obligated to leave an additional tip for accommodating any special dietary needs, lifestyle dietary needs, or Kosher needs, regardless if you are on a Dine plan or paying al a carte.

Hope this helps! :sohappy:

I have a slight tree nut allergy. I don't normally mention anything about it to servers because its not severe. When we went to the Liberty Tree Tavern, the people at the podium asked if someone in the group had any allergies, and so my parents told them about me.

When the food was served, they made a big deal to mention what didn't have the tree nuts in it. (I think the bread was the only thing that did)

Also, I had a salad from the Columbia Harbor house. There are pecans on it, but I asked if they could make me one special without it and they did.

I was on the DDP and that wasn't a problem and there was no extra charge for it.

I've heard such good things about how the people at Disney cater to special needs so I'm sure you'll have no problem.
