You can do this effect as well. It is super easy and you do not have to burn anything.
If you want the smell of burning (or the smell of Rome burning from Spaceship earth) here is what you do:
(I am unsure of the EXACT mechanism that Disney uses here, but it is probably a drip based or fog based system)
Stuff you need:
A coaster from a bar (one of those cheap coasters that beer is frequently served upon made of thick absorbant paper)
1 bottle of "Liquid Smoke" found in grocery stores in or around the BBQ sauce or BBQ coals section. (Liquid smoke is a smoke flavoring that smells exactly like SE Rome Burning)
1 Fan or space heaer.
Pour some liquid smoke on the coaster.
Place or hang the coaster on the back grill of the fan so it stays there but doesn't get sucked in when the fan is on. Turn on the fan and wherever it blows you get the smell of burning wood.
Alternative: Place the coaster in front of (but NOT so close that it DOES actually burn) the space heater and turn it on. Now you have hot burning smell.
Super alternative for folks with a halloween fogger:
If you have a fogger for halloween (Wall-mart sells this with fog juice during the halloween season). All you have to do is pour a few drops of the Liquid Smoke into the fogger resevoir WITH fog juice in it and turn it on. Now you have fog that smells like smoke.
