WDI ENHANCING SPACE MOUNTAIN.....

Construction teams have begun sealing the SM building as installation of new show elements begins inside. For a glimpse of what to expect when the attraction reopens in 2005, WDI Sr. Show Prod. Chrissie Allen took a few moments to answer questions about the revamped version of this classic attraction.

WHAT ASPECTS OF SM WILL BE CHANGING?
When SM comes back, you are going to find the attraction that you have always known and always loved; but its going to be so much better than it has ever been.
Our Immagineers have dramatically enhanced the storytelling from the moment you enter the building. We took the launch sequence and brought it up to 21st. century and restored all of the [film] and media effects. We worked extensively with WDI R& D on the technologies and projections used on the attraction. We also updated the architecture of the entry sequences and have a new score for the onboard audio system.

WHAT CAN YOU SAY ABOUT THE NEW SOUNDTRACK?
The idea is to enhance the attraction with a new audio experience. We previously had a great track and found that people realy, realy, liked it. But now we have made the technology more reliable and gave it a really hard, new bouncy soundtrack that will augment the experience of the attraction.

WHAT WILL BE THE MOST EXCITING ELEMENT OF THE NEW ATTRACTION?
This is hard to pick because we've done so many things in there. If I had to pick one, I would say the Lift B tunnel [a new portion of the attraction after the first lift hill].
Guests will be totally wowed by the feeling of disorientation and even weightlessness in the tunnel. After they enter the tunell, they'll notice that the whole tunnel is spinning, thanks to a great new special effect, as it aims them into space. I think lift B tunnel is really going to surprise people and will be a very exciting addition.

THATS IT!

Hmmmm.... Is the spinning tunnel going to be like the one the trams go through at Universal? I remember Space Mountain used to have a spinning tunnel at the end of the ride and it always made me a little dizzy.

Disneyland really needs to release an official opening date for Space Mountain. If they expect crowds to surge through the gates come May 5th without anyone knowing when it is safe to plan a vacation on this ride, they will likely be surprised at a lack of guests. I think the sluggish response to the Happiest Faces on Earth should be a signal to Disneyland that most people are not overly impressed at the 50th offerings, and they need to kick this project into 2nd gear and get it open before all of summer 2005 becomes a washout.

DOH!! Spinning tunnels like that always make me feel really sick...

Me too! I really hope this isn't that type of effect. That will ruin the ride for me (unless I keep my eyes closed on the lift hill...but where's the fun in that?). Plus, this isn't really that impressive of an effect. It's old "technology" that's been used in amusement parks since the 20's.

Dont be so worried that the tunnel will be just a spinning thing seen thousands of times since the 1920's I too was worried when I read it, but then I read the next line, "a great new special effect" so that seems like WDI once again came up something really cool we havent seen yet. So have no fears Disney will not do anything half-_ _ _ or at least i hope not.....

That's my hope as well.
