Space Mountain Seats

Yes, those side by side ones were used in DL. They are probably on sale now because the DL version is getting rehabbed with newer rockets. I suppose they're wanting to get rid of the old ones.

Why does Disney make different seating for both parks? I know DL Splash Mountain is one seat four rows and WDW is 2 seats 4 rows.

I've never ridden SM at DL but I have to say I prefer MK's seating configuration. The seats are tight enough as they are. I can't imagine squeezing into a two car seater. I wonder how the new ones at DL will turn out.

My best guess is that they were built at different times, designed/redesigned by different people, etc. IIRC, they aren't EXACTLY the same ride - maybe they decided the double seats (on Spalsh) were better than singles, and the opposite for Space, and designed the newer version to reflect that? Like they way they had to lose the horizontal movement in the 5th dimension at ToT in DCA - tptb ~liked~ that effect, but it was the cause for much of the downtime the WDW version has, so it was redesigned...

In both cases, the newer version has more seats - more seats means you can handle more guests per hour. That's my guess.

The trains at DL are much wider than at WDW, so the side-by-side seating is very comfortable...much more so than WDW's.

The new ones at DL are quite similar to the old ones, with just some cosmetic differences and onboard sound.

I happen to have a photo of the new rockets for Hong Kong and Disneyland.

Despite the two SMs having different seats, nearly all, if not all of my WDW vacation planning videos feature the 2x3 DL SM. Strange eh!

Those cars look really great. I wonder when WDW will get new ones.

They do this all the time. Little things I noticed in the WDW Planning Video...

Disneyland Fantasmic
Disneyland New Orleans Square
Disneyland Tomorrowland...Hello!...one is gold the other is silver.
Clip of OLD Poly pool and NEW Poly pool...now won't someone think they're 2 pools?
*Sorry for the drift. I should make a thread about this*

One other reason the DL SM cars are 2 wide is that there is only one track inside the that version of the mountain and the double-wide seating dramatically increases the capacity of the ride. If they had the single-wide seating like MK the line would be out the front gate.

As for Splash, as I understood it the toboggan style seating at DL where you are literally sitting in someone elses lap one behind the other was so slow loading they had to redesign it for the subsequent versions. Again, with the single file seating you have much lower capacity per hour and the longer lines to go with that.

True.
That, plus in designing the ride for WDW and Tokyo, they had to take into consideration cultural issues in Japan. Their culture wouldn't go for sitting in someone's lap...hence side by side seating on the subsequent Mountains.

When they built Splash Mountain at Disneyland, no one considered any type of seating configuration other than the standard log ride, which is single file. When they got ready to build it in Tokyo, however, the Japanese weren't comfortable with the seating configuration, because it was like sitting on someone's lap. So they had to think "outside the box" and they came up with the side by side, which is actually very odd for a log flume ride. However, they discovered that the capacity of the ride was greatly increased, so they naturally built it that way for WDW.

Wow. I have never been to DL so I didn't know the cars were different seating. I do rember that when Space Mt. at WDW first opened, you basicly sat on the floor of the car and you couldn't lift your arms. now they have real seats that sit you higher in the car and you can lift your arms. :veryconfu

the difference in SM seats at WDW and DL always made me scratch my head...glad to hear some insight into it! :D also...the WDW Space MTn. seats always make me uncomfortable (being 5'10" and very leggy). i also always wondered if the DL seats made the ride feel any different.

I don't know if it's really due to the seating configuration as much as it's due to the track design, but Space Mt at DL has always been a MUCH smoother, sleeker ride. WDW is mostly a lot of little drops every few moments and some sharp turns. It's also QUITE a bumpy ride (especially in the back seat). DL only has a couple of drops, but they're bigger and smoother (especially the second one, which gives you a momentary feeling of weightlessness). Instead of a lot of sharp turns, it's more of a lot of wide, banking turns (and mostly to the right). Comparitively, WDW's version definitely feels like an old rickety roller coaster, where DL's (built only 2 years later) almost doesn't even feel like you're on a track.
