LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Attendance at Disney's Epcot theme park is rising, thanks to one of the parks newest attractions Mission: Space.

Epcot's attendance had been flagging over the past years because of a shaky economy and fears of terrorism.

Industry analysts said the attraction, which simulates a rocket ride to Mars, gave Disney a shot of creativity needed to bring people to the park.

The president of the consulting firm International Theme Park Services, Dennis Spiegel, estimates that attendance is up at Epcot by at least 5 percent -- which is strong growth for the second-oldest park in Walt Disney World.

The tourism industry expects 2004 to be a good year. However, analysts say climbing oil prices could change things.

Oil prices are a factor that will cut out the lower income park visitors who will be detered by the marginal effect of the increases.

I'm thrilled to see Epcot doing so well again. It would be interesting to know how much Mission:Space has contributed to not only the increase in Epcot's attendance, but also the overall increase that WDW as a whole has been seeing. In other words, how many families decided to plan another trip down to WDW and Orlando after hearing about the opening of Mission:Space? The media buzz even all the way up in PA was VERY favorable towards Mission:Space from radio talk shows in the morning (one host went on it recently and talked about how fantastic it was one morning) to even coverage on our local TV news stations.

For the most part, I think the media talk of Mission:Space fell on deaf ears for those not interested in disney to begin with. When you've been following a ride, like most of us do, then you're sensitive to all talk of it.

I think the rise in attendance is primarily the effect of increased tourism to the area once more.
