I hope this is in the right forum.Jim Hill's site is reporting that Disney's Song of the South will be released on DVD in 06. I've learn from past threads that other sites should be taken with a "grain of salt",so thats why I'm askimg here. You guys always have the inside info. Again, Sorry if this is in the wrong thread.

I hope that he's right. A few years ago we bought a copy of the video on ebay, it was sold in Europe and was the wrong format for American VCR's, so we sent it to a company that copied it to a standard tape, but even so, the quality is a little sketchy. I'd love to get this classic on DVD.

I like most would love to see it and own it, my cell phone's ringtone plays "Zip pa tee doo da" would love to see a movie i've heard about, besides if it's true, you can almost guess that it may sell out right away too being one of disneys rare gems. But if they really want to launch it,they should have a limited rerelease in the movie theater before going on DVD,then again right to dvd will sell good too.
Don't forget BAMBI will be released on DVD tuesday 3/1/05.

I haven't read the article but I know at the last Disney investors conference at WDW it was said there that they were looking into releasing it. So it gives some credibility to the release. More so than in the past.

I know this movie can bring up a lot of "political" issues, which I don't want to get into. I would be so happy if this was released on DVD. I have seen a copy of it recently (a pretty decent copy) and it brought back so many memories for me. One of the first things I ever did with my step dad was to see this movie during one of its theatrical releases. I loved my step dad as much as my dad, so I consider myself lucky that I had 2 wonderful fathers. Seeing this movie again brought back memories of that first meeting with my step dad, and I had a flood of memories of him re-telling the stories of Brer Fox, Brer Bear and Brer Rabbit, as he tucked me into bed. He's passed away now, and I loved that I was able to share those stories with my own kids. I just don't understand why Disney has been "embarrassed" of this classic, yet built an e-ticket ride based on it!

:sohappy: MY 100th POST!

I would also like to see this film released on DVD. I've a friend who has the Japanese laserdisc release and have seen it. I agree with the Jim Hill article about how the release would have to be framed in a certain way to offend as few sensibilities as possible, though.

The film is very much a product of its time and I believe no ill intent was mentioned in its portrayal of African-Americans, but it's not clear if Uncle Remus was a slave or a free man. Even though the film may raise a few eyebrows today (it did raise mine), it's amazing to me that in 1946 you saw a genuine friendship between races presented on film. Audiences had never seen that before and it was quite some time before it was seen on film again.

Actually, I found the mainframe story of the film kinda dull, but the animated sequences are truly some of the finest examples of the 1940s Disney style.. Certainly some of the zaniest stuff I have ever seen them do... a few times I found myself thinking that they'd taken a few cues from Warner Bros. "Looney Tunes"... yep... the animated sequences can be that fun, irreverant and zany!

It would truly be a treasure to have this small gem of a film available to the public in the U.S. again after being shelved for nearly 20 years.

I saw Song of the South recently, and thought it was a genuinely bad movie. The live action scenes, which take up at least 75% of the movie, did very little for me, and while the animated scenes were fun, they in no way lived up to my expectations from Splash Mountain, which, in my mind, has VASTLY improved versions of all of the songs. Splash Mountain was based pretty loosely on the movie, and I felt that was for the better. It's perhaps one of the movies I'd like to have in my collection, but I don't see myself watching it very often...it's not the type of movie that I think would make all that much money, as I don't see most kids really enjoying it.

Do not forget that the movie was made in the 40's. That may have something to do with your expectations about the animation. I hope it is released. I like the story, but it does raise an eybrow or two.

I found a version on DVD, but it looks like someone burned a copy of a digital taping and since digital was not out then, it had to be a conversion from tape to digi. The quality is ok, and it will do if you really want it on DVD. I think it was found on ebay.

I honestly did not see any negative portrayal in the movie. Uncle Remus is a positive, motiviting and uplifting characte. If just the fact that slavery is portrayed in the movie is bad, then a number of epics would need to be banned as well. My six year old little girl watched the movie and with the miriad of questions she asked, not one time was slavery issue raised, so take that for what it is.....

Its a great movie, a heartwarming story, and yes, allot of groundbreaking (for the 40's) animation work.

I couldn't agree more. Since I loved Splash Moutain so much I figured it was going to be a great & entertaining film. But you basically want to ring that little brats neck midway through the film.

I only saw it 1 time, but I was underwhelmed by the animated parts as well. They felt too short and not enough happened during them. Splash Mountain tells a far better story

He was going to leave the plantation take off to Atlanta on his own; slaves most definitely did not do this.

Also, while I know all kids are different, my 9 yr old watched the disc I found, and wanted to see it again the next day. And if he gets out of line, I can always threaten to make him go to school dressed as the boy in the film :fork: .

Cheers.

Exactly. I don't think the argument that it was made in the 40s should count for anything. Snow White was made in the 30s and the animation and plot were FAR superior.

This announcement (or what is perceived at this point) has really caused a Disney commotion! I already got an email from an old CM from my store about it. Could be a very big success or a big flop.

Do you remember when Disney said they would never release Snow White on video or DVD? Interesting what happens when they maybe a little short on cash...

i'm actually very nervous about this. this could really hurt the companies image in many ways. i've never seen the entire movie, but i know why it isn't released right now. what is the general public going to think when disney releases a movie that they've held back because of racist issues? are they going to think that disney doesn't care anymore, or be happy that they are letting people choose whether or not to watch it, and make their own minds up if it's racist or not.

nervous to see if it's a huge success, or a horrible flop. - i think money wise, it will be a success, because so many people will buy it only for it's rarity (sp?), but the aftermath once it's sold out...? :veryconfu

I said a while back that they should just re-do the movie as a cartoon altogether wether based on the ride or however they want to do it. Eyebrow raising, offensive, or however anybody views it, i agree with what was already said....it's a bad movie. And for all those who haven't seen it, and are drooling to own it, many of you are going to walk away dissapointed, because the ride and the movie are very different. ( I also wanted to ring the kid's neck, and strangely found myself rooting for the bull at the end)

I am happy it will be coming out. I do have a version of this movie. I will be it but it really is not the best movie Disney ever made. But its worth seeing.
