Something special for mom and son trip

Hi everyone ! My DS age 10 and I will be visiting WDW for 2 weeks in November, 2015. This trip will be a little different than usual as it used to be my husband and I and our 2 children. In 2015 my oldest son will be in university and unable to come and my husband and I recently divorced.

I originally thought WDW might be tainted for me as I had so much resentment towards my ex husband and WDW used to be "our" special place, but then I realised .. no way is he taking that from me ! So, my DS and I will be heading to WDW to make some new memories ! We normally stay offsite but since it's just the two of us I would like him to have lots of kids around to socialize with so I'm thinking of the Art of Animation resort.

My question is ... any suggestions on special experiences that we could do together? I know we have never tried the drawing studio (not sure of the name) at HS so I would love to do that ! But I'm not familiar with much other than the rides. I know someone here is bound to have something new and awesome for us to try !!

Thank you !!

Totally go do the The Pirate League together! I'm sure you've seen all the little princesses from boutique, but the pirates are a newer addition. It's next to Pirates of the Caribbean. They do full pirate makeup and you join the pirate league. It's a cool experience you guys can do together!

I'm trying to plan a trip in the fall and wonder the same things.

At the end of April, I went on a trip with my immediate family and my soon-to-be ex-husband did not go. We went for 6 days. I was worried how I'd feel (since I felt the same as you) but once I got there, all my thoughts and doubts slipped away. My DS, almost 8, did not care his father wasn't there and we had a few moments where it was just the two of us. I took a bunch of selfies of us...whether it was riding the carousel next to each other or cooling off on a bench in the shade. The little quality time we spent at the pool was great (it rained while we were there, boo)! I thoroughly enjoyed the two character dining meals we had together (one breakfast, one dinner).

I will highly recommend going to an arcade (we like the one at the Contemporary), young boys love playing games and/or being able to get prizes (if available).

We went to the drawing class in HS last year and it was quite fun. And since they change the character at every session, you can go a few times and have a different experience and be able to bring home different drawings as souvenirs!

Maybe one of the tours would be a good idea? i want to take my son on the steam train one but i think he needs to be 10, which would be perfect for your son.

Whatever you do, you'll be cherishing every moment of your trip together and making everlasting memories!

Have Fun!:)

I would suggest doing the Wild Africa Trek together. Kids 8 and under can do it. I have not done it yet by my daughter (age 8) and I are planning to do it in October. I've read nothing but wonderful things. It would be a great place for you to make some wonderful memories together!

I agree with all of the above- one of the tours, pirates league, and Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party would all be a lot of fun.

You could do the Wishes Dessert Buffet one night at the Magic Kingdom; you'll sit in a special section at Tomorrowland Terrace. They have great desserts, and you won't have to worry about grabbing a spot for Wishes.

On mother's day, my son (5 at the time) and I went to DTD and explored the shops and sweets! We loved the Lego store and looking at all the displays. We both had Goofy glaciers to cool off and were just very silly. We also stuffed a dinosaur at T-rex (we didn't eat there though). It was a very relaxing day with no special plans, but it is one of my favorite days at WDW.

We've also done character meals with just the two of us, and the characters are always amazing! The Mad Hatter had my son laughing so hard he couldn't breath! (At 1900 Park Fare)

I'm sure you'll have very special moments that will pop up, since there are so many things to explore at WDW. I hope you have an amazing trip!!

My son and I will be taking a Mother/Son trip in Mar 2015 as well :) He is 8 but has already decided he wants to be a Botanist when he grows up, so the F&G festival is our main attraction. I am definitely looking at one of the special tours for us as well just to add some extra fun to our trip.

I love that your DS wants to be a botanist! He will love living with the land! There is a private tour for it, but it sounds like you've already found that.

F&G is really great, too... We've gone to EP for F&G so many times that without the topiaries, I think EP looks naked! There are all sorts of hidden educational things he will enjoy. They usually have a huge plant/flower plot over by the back entrance of the park - next to England. I think you have to exit the park to see it, so just make sure you're able to do that with your ticket. I really think he would appreciate it though - most people walk right by without even noticing it... and it's huge!
