Soarin'

I have to agree, that Soarin' really isn't that great. The simulation of flying seems real enough, but there's no story, no plot...really, no point. All of the sudden the seats lift up and you're flying over the ocean, then CUT -- now you're flying over the mountains, then CUT -- now the desert, CUT -- until the finale when you fly over Disneyland. There is no narration, no story, or any real connection between each of the flying scenes, so in the end you have a bunch of isolated scenes over different California locales.

Absolutely 100% agree with this!! That's one of the "complaints" I've always made about Soarin'. It wouldn't have been difficult at all to have some sort of smooth transition from one "scene" to the next. I'm not even an Imagineer and I was able to come up with a decent transition idea (basically, your "cloud" idea). But instead, it just sorta fades from one California scene to the next. The other thing that is disappointing (and very NOT Disney) is the fact that they don't even try to disguise the fact that it's all taking place on a big movie screen. When you enter the room where the show takes place, the first thing you see is a big movie screen with a bunch of seats hanging in front of it. Then after you sit down, the lights go down and the film starts...BORRRING! They should have had it so that when you first go in, the screen is somehow obscured (maybe have it so that you're inside a hangar or something). Then the "hangar doors" could open to reveal the screen (which would, of course, already have the film running on it).

What do you think these are - message boards? It's ludicrous to think that people post what they feel!! LUDICROUS, I SAY!!

I’m in astonishment by how ignorant you are. It was my opinion to disregard Merlin’s opinion, which I think was the exact point you were trying to make. Also, your “rolling eyes” face really helped amplify the feeling you were going for, seeing as how you seem incapable to express it via the written word.

At least Merlin followed up his response to mine in a dignified and respectable manner, by further elaborating, thus clarifying his position, as opposed to writing a sarcasm filled response which supplemented little other than your ego. I have no problem with Merlin's further classification of him opinion, but I merely wished to convey that one shouldn't take a single poster's opinion at face value.

Opinion or opinion - it seemed rude to to tell the board to skip over someone's post, versus posting your own ideas.

It is something to say, "I think Merlin is wrong," rather than, "Disregard Merlin."

Allow me to introduce you to a good friend of mine...

*rings the bell* DAR-RELL!!!

Sure it seemed rude; I'm an upfront guy. If I think someone is talking out of their rear, I'll call them on it. I think it was "rude" of Merlin to not provide any details in his original opinion, especially since it was one which went unrequested, but he at least remedied half of that with his followup response. Furthermore, I did provide my opinion on the attraction, which I can only presume you implied by your "ideas" usage.

I'm pretty sure Merlin can fight his own battles and doesn't require the assistance of a another poster (especially when I use the term "battle" very loosely).

Battle? Hogwash.

I don't have to stand up for anyone, but I can dance like a banana.

My Soaring Review

I rode this during my DLR trip a few months ago. I liked it. You're on a hang glider, with your legs dangling below your seat. In front of you is an IMAX screen. Your hang glider is attached to a flight simulator, to give it movement that goes with the film. The room has rows and rows of these hang gliders so there could be hundreds of riders in a single room. The film is short. It takes you through the mountains, valencia feilds, waterfalls, etc. As you "fly", there are special effects such as wind blowing in your face, "smells" (think Mickey's Philharmagic), and drips of water.

I enjoyed it, but I can't understand why they used IMAX instead of OMNIMAX. OMNIMAX is the system used in Universal's Back to the Future, and what used to be in Horizons. OMNIMAX provides total immersion in a large screen the curvs to the sides, so you never see the edges of the screen. IMAX does not have this illusion, as you can definately see the side edges of the screen.

If it's as you describe, I'm glad they didn't utilize OMNIMAX. I, for once, found the curvature of the screen to be a distraction resulting from the rounded distortion of the image.

I want to add to this thread that when I went to California, all the people I spoke to (before going to DL) told me "You have to go on Soaring! It's incredible!" These people, BTW, have never been to WDW. I told them that they have to ride Tower of Terror when it opens at DCA. Any way, my point is.... After riding Soaring, I am convinced that they (Californians) will be more impressed with TZToT when it opens than we Floridians will be with Saoring when it opens at EPCOT.

That says something about how spoiled us Floridians have become, compared to our friends on the West Coast.

That's just my humble opinion.

That may be, but my father who’s been to Disney World no less than 8 times (for more than a week each), was very impressed by Soarin’. It quickly became one of his favorite attractions.

I LOVE Soarin.
Rode it multiple times, loved it each time.

Granted, it's no ToT or Splash Mountain, but it is a one of a kind Disney experience, and will be a great addition to Epcot.

I remember reading on Screamscape long ago the idea of a Soarin' attraction based off of Horizons - well before DCA opened. I could just imagine a brand new Epcot darkride attraction that could even include Soarin'. Hmm...the possibilities.

You are not alone. I find Soarin' to be a very pleasent ride but still only a D ticket. There isn't much imagination in it really. It would be a fine addition to a Wolrd Showcase country but as people seem to consider it THE attraction at DCA...well I just disagree. Most people will find it to be a fine attraction but, as Merlin said, because it is in DCA where most everything else is not a big deal, Soarin moves to the top of the list.

Exactly my feelings as well. Sure, it will certainly be a nice addition, but it certainly shouldn't be hailed as Disney's next greatest accomplishment for Epcot. It's frustrating that it seems everytime that Disney opens a new ride, they have to close something else in the process (Food Rocks, Wonders of Life). So we'll be a getting a fairly decent new attraction, but also losing some in the process.

Ditto!!! I know a lot of people "can't wait" for it to open in Florida, but don't set your expectations too high for this one. Merlin is right, this attraction is fun but is totally overrated. And as has already been stated, the only reason it stands out is because it is at DCA where nothing is all that great to begin with.
