I have to agree, that Soarin' really isn't that great. The simulation of flying seems real enough, but there's no story, no plot...really, no point. All of the sudden the seats lift up and you're flying over the ocean, then CUT -- now you're flying over the mountains, then CUT -- now the desert, CUT -- until the finale when you fly over Disneyland. There is no narration, no story, or any real connection between each of the flying scenes, so in the end you have a bunch of isolated scenes over different California locales.
Absolutely 100% agree with this!! That's one of the "complaints" I've always made about Soarin'. It wouldn't have been difficult at all to have some sort of smooth transition from one "scene" to the next. I'm not even an Imagineer and I was able to come up with a decent transition idea (basically, your "cloud" idea). But instead, it just sorta fades from one California scene to the next. The other thing that is disappointing (and very NOT Disney) is the fact that they don't even try to disguise the fact that it's all taking place on a big movie screen. When you enter the room where the show takes place, the first thing you see is a big movie screen with a bunch of seats hanging in front of it. Then after you sit down, the lights go down and the film starts...BORRRING! They should have had it so that when you first go in, the screen is somehow obscured (maybe have it so that you're inside a hangar or something). Then the "hangar doors" could open to reveal the screen (which would, of course, already have the film running on it).
