Sleeping Beauty Castle moat drained

When I was at DL yesterday I saw that they've drained the moat around Sleeping Beauty Castle... and yuck! It smelled kinda nasty, and was definitely unsightly. Does anyone know why they've drained it now, instead of waiting for the Castle refurb starting in June??

The Hub in general looks pretty pathetic at the moment, between the work walls up while they replace the trees, the drained moat, and the lack of a decent paint job on the Castle...

Aah, the Castle Refurb is about to begin. Mice Age has reported that Sleeping Beauty castle will go under a HUGE rehab. The moat is drained which is the first step, castle foundations will be replaced, the castle will get a new paint job, a new workable draw bridge, and 50th logo on the front. It should look more beautiful than ever!:sohappy:

Ah, I knew they were doing it this summer (I saw a concrete date for Castle refurb closure somewhere) but I wasn't aware that it had actually started already. Thanks! :) I'm very glad the Castle is getting fixed up, though. It needs it badly. I've been whining about the paint job for a long time (it makes for horribly washed-out looking photos), so I'm especially happy to hear about that!

You're welcome!:D The one main thing that I've always compained about the castle is the roof. It looks so faded! I saw an old Disneyland sing along songs video and I saw the castle and the roofs just looked so.... BLUE.:slurp:

Just walked by the castle tonight, it's filled in again, phew!

That was nasty!!! But the plans were to de-muck the moat on Monday night, and apparantly they've filled it in since then.

Is that Disneyland Sing along video the same one that I have? It has footage of Party Gras in the Disneyland Parade song.

Yes! Exactly! I was working at MK while they repainted the castle roof in 2002... and looking at my pictures from before and after, I can see a HUGE difference. I can't wait to see what the castle looks like all refreshed!

Hooray! It was really bad show, but I suppose they had to do it sometime! They must not have finished it on Monday night, cause it still looked pretty mucky to me on Tuesday.

I doubt it because its just too small.

Yup, I gotta agree here. It's too small. As for changing it during the refurbishment, it would take waaaaaaay longer the 2 or 3 months it will be covered, just becase it wolud require major structural changes. I can't see it happening at all anytime in the near future. And I don't believe making it multilevel would help at all - anyone who's seen it in person can tell you it's just not big enough.

Oh well, but what then do they use the inside for anyway?

There's those two really tiny shops as you walk through the Castle, and other than that I think it's just storage areas.

Sleeping Beauty Castle is home to two shops. One themed for princess merchandise (castle left) another is set to finding family crests.

There is also a walk through diorama of the Sleeping Beauty story. You enter rear castle left, and exit rear castle right. There were various "books" with the story, and little sets with different sized dolls of the characters. Scenes include: Aurora's birth, the curse, the burning of all the kingdom's spindles, Briar Rose and the fairies in the forest, Briar Rose and Prince Phillip's first meeting, Maleficent and her goons, Aurora following the mystic cotton ball up the stairs, the fight between Prince Phillip and the dragon, the kiss, and the fairies fighting over Aurora's dress as Aurora and Pricne Phillip dance.

Unfortunately, the castle diorama was closed shortly after 9/11. There are two theories: fear of terrorist attack (which IMO doesn't hold up as Cinderella's Royal Table in Florida is still up and running), or accessibility. The fact is, the castle was all stairs, and there is no possible way to work an elevator sytem into the attraction. And because of that, I honestly doubt that the diorama will be reopened.

I personally think it doesn't matter. Sure its big, but mostly for show, and group meeting grounds. Other than that and a picture or two, I wouldn't even take notice of it.
