Hoax Shooting Call Brings Deputies To Disney's Magic Kingdom

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- Orange County deputies responded to a call about a shooting in the parking lot of Disney's Magic Kingdom, but it turned out to be a hoax.

Deputies said Thursday night they received a call from a teenage girl saying that her father had been shot, but they couldn't find the victim.

A further check showed that the call originated from somewhere in the Panhandle.

The prankster could face serious charges if she's caught.

This is just plain stupid.... I know some areas, the parents are also held responsible for the action of their teenage kids... How is it in Florida?

In the state of Florida the parent might not be responsible for the childs actions. The law states, "Parent not liable unless child is entrusted with dangerous instrument or unless child is acting as agent of parent, parent knows of wrongdoing, and consents of action"

But there are ways to get around this.

I'll never understand what makes people think this is funny! During the summer months here, our local coast Guard gets false alarm SOS distress calls, which wastes not only their time and resources, but leaves them less equipped to handle real emergencies. What are these people thinking?

If they can trace the call enough to realize that it was placed somewhere in the panhandle, then they can see exactly what phone number called and who pays the bill for that number. Give it a day or two.

The call can be traced, it's just a matter of time & patience. It can depend on what agency will take the crime & run with it; will the County investigate or defer to the State agency. It can also depend on how co-operative the individual phone company may be. Some pony up the needed documentation, others force the Police the get search warrants and/or a subpoena. And, at least in Michigan, whether the charge of filing a false police report is a felony or a misdemeanor is dependant on what the original call is reference to; i.e. a call about a shooting is a felony, a call about a simple A&B would be a misdemeanor.

Here's to a quick, through investigation, arrest & prosecution. :sohappy:

they've actually done studies. its not so much that they think its "funny", as much as they feel almost "important", setting up these scenarios and making the coast guard or police run around needlessly. its the feeling that you're controlling or effecting events instead of just the world controlling you.
