So, Dreamworks second CGI film this year, Shark Tale, opens this weekend....any guesses on how well it will do?

Well...since I personally think it's a knock-off of Nemo, I hope it does poorly...but I'm sure with the luck that Dreamworks has, it will do well. I have never seen the entire movie of Shrek...and I don't really care to either. I hope Ladder 49 does well...but who knows!

I agree with you on the part about the rip off of Nemo. I'm sure it's a different plot line, but come on, they totally stole the idea. Shrek is a good movie though. :D

Not sure I saw some things about sharks tales it was some type of 10 thing for it on VH1 and I stopped watching it after the first two countdown things. I did not look all that appealing to me. I think I will stick with Shrek..

Ialso think it is a take from Nemo and I don't think it will be as good. I did think Shierk was good but it was not Disney in the least.

I am not sure why any of you think it is a rip-off of Nemo.

First, the movies take so long to produce, that it was in production before Nemo was ever released.

Secondly, besides using fish as characters, the stories are nothing alike. If these two movies are the "same" because both use "fish" as a subject, are all "human" movies the same too?

I must say I am looking more forward to "The Incredibles", but as the movie is focused on super-heros, it is just a rip-off of Batman, Superman, and Spiderman.

IT IS NOT A RIP-OFF OF NEMO!

Looks great, going to see it tomorrow after I get out of school. I think it'll take in about $62 million this weekend.

I think it will gross slightly less than $50 million, around $45 million. Ladder 49 will gross maybe $20 million, while I (heart) Huckabees will come in at a surprising third with $12 million.

AND IT'S NOT A RIP-OFF!

Well, according to the review in my newspaper (The Morning Call), Shark Tales was given a fairly poor review. The first or second paragraph, the comparison was made between Nemo and the movie (this coming from probably not a Disney fan, although I can't say one way or the other). I wish I would have brought it to work with me so I could post it...or at least quote from it. But it wasn't good...that's all that I know.

It doesn't seem to be as much a rip-off of Nemo as it is a rip-off of the Godfather.

The reviews for it are not good. And just from the trailer, it honestly doesn't look very funny to me. The trailer for "The Incredibles" looks much funnier. I believe I am going to have to pass -- wait for release on DVD.

Folks, forget what the darn critics say. They are just a bunch of old guys who want to see a bunch of dramas and stupid comidies anyway.

So I just got back from seeing Shark Tale....

My rating: :sohappy: :sohappy: :sohappy: :sohappy:

Better than Nemo, my friends.... :D

I loved it! It was a fantastic movie. DreamWorks is getting into the game and I'm sorry to say it, but I am liking their movies now more than I like Pixar's. Will Smith was great, Jack Black was great, Rob DeNiro was great. I think I'll have to see it again.

There was a trailer for DreamWorks Animation's newest film, Madagascar (out Summer 2005), which looks hilarious (Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, and others do the voice work) as well.

(by the way....IT IS NOT A RIP-OFF!)

An interesting review

"The Jawsfather"
by Scott Holleran

Watching Robert DeNiro spoof his Vito Corleone characterization in DreamWorks' Shark Tale isn't as much fun as it sounds, though the movie is no worse than the usual crop of computer-generated nonsense. It's all here: pop culture jokes with no bearing on the story, self-aware celebrity voiceovers, body function humor, colorful animation and a few good tunes.

By now, today's kids must be so pummeled with crude stand-up comedy masquerading as a story that they couldn't sit still for Mary Poppins if they were strapped to the seat and spoon-fed a bottle of Ritalin. Why parents take their kids to a 90-minute monologue of adult jokes instead of renting movies with childlike imagination like The Little Mermaid is as much a mystery as whatever The Matrix means. But they do and, as these episodic features go, Shark Tale's not terrible.

Will Smith is the movie's weakest link as the voice of a lazy, dishonest fish that seeks something for nothing. He wants to be rich but he hates work (he's employed at the whale wash), and Smith's worthless fish is the movie's focal point. Renee Zellweger's plain Jane fish has the hots for Smith, but he's busy loafing in the fish 'hood with tykes who spray graffiti and ditch school. She's so enamored with this loser that she lets him hawk her grandmother's priceless pearl, which he bets on a losing race, despite the fact that he's up to here in debt to a loan shark.

With a couple of fishes like these two, it's tempting to root for the sharks, who have already made a brief appearance, by way of Mr. DeNiro's godfather and his two sons, one tough guy and the other, voiced by Jack Black, a nerdy vegetarian.

Through a series of misunderstandings, Smith's hip-hop fish concocts a tall tale that he's a shark-slayer, which jettisons him to move on up in the waterworld, where Angelina Jolie's Jessica Rabbit fish stands by for some serious gold digging. Between brief bursts of plot, sprinkled with anchorless jokes, there are mini-music videos -- the music's not bad for those who favor light hip-hop -- and Shark Tale moves along at a snail's pace.

For full disclosure, Finding Nemo felt just as bland to these eyes, though at least Nemo looked like it took place underwater. Still, the DreamWorks animators weren't given much beyond recreating an undersea South Central, which seems designed conspicuously as a vehicle for Smith, the soundtrack talent and the joke writers, whose only directive appears to be a subscription to one of those bitchy entertainment magazines and watching hours of BET.

Black's vegan shark is the most distinctive character. When Black's Lenny is on screen, Shark Tale livens up. Black inhabits the voice and inflection like a real character, not a famous actor, but the script, which has his timid shark using extortion to get what he wants, snags him. Eventually, Mr. DeNiro does his bit in the finale -- and his voice is welcome in a lighter movie -- but, at that point, it couldn't matter less whether Smith's fish sinks or swims.

Grade: C-

You're really take things too seriously. Shrek IMO was way better than some of Disney's latest attempts (Treasure Planet. sequels). Any true Disney fan would give this a try and see what Disney is missing! A creative bunch! ;)

Shark Tales... Looks like a total rip-off to me. I'll wait for the DVD.

Well folks, rotten tomatoes.com labled it rotten ( 33% ). Sorry Shark tale, but you just can't beat nemo! :sohappy:

Brother Bear got a 39%
Home on the Range got a 50%

I think the Tomato-meter is a bit broken (also, Mulan and Chicken Run both scored higher than Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and The Lion King)

From BoxOfficeMojo.com:

Friday Estimates
1 SHARK TALE -$12,500,000
2 LADDER 49 - $7,400,000
3 THE FORGOTTEN - $3,800,000
4 SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW - $1,000,000
5 SHAUN OF THE DEAD - $750,000
6 WOMAN, THOU ART LOOSED - $720,000
7 MR. 3000 - $690,000
8 FIRST DAUGHTER - $620,000
9 RESIDENT EVIL: APOCALYPSE - $600,000
10. CELLULAR - $560,000

Just goes to show you that audiences can't seem to see a quality film anymore.....

*sigh*

However, it should definitely break $100 million. It will also have some staying power, as another children's film is due out until The Incredibles, if I am not mistaken.

I was invited to see it today and didn't take up that offer. . .

The film may be very good, but from what I have read and seen, it just doesn't appeal to me.
