Shades of Green/Military Discount question

I hope someone can help me with a question. We will be going to WDW for a 10-day stay in July. We won't be staying at the SOG, although my husband is AD military. We'll be staying at a timeshare in Orlando. I'm wondering if we are able to purchase our WDW Passports through SOG at the reduced rate even if we aren't lodging there ? Also, does anyone know what percentage less it is to purchase tickets there versus the gate ? Thank you in advance from a Disney newbie :)

They are rehabing SOG, I had a guest in the store a few nights ago tell me that they were putting them at the Contemporary for $65 a night. I thought military ids got you in for free??? That's what that thing is when you go in the gate that you put your fingers on??????

Military ID's get you discounts. Nothing is ever free. The things at the gates for the fingers is for people with Annual Passes, and other special tickets. It has nothing to do with the military.

That is correct..the SOG is being re-modeled and guests are being put up at the Contemporary for now, but they do maintain a little SOG office temporarily there.

No, I believe the free Disney admission promo ended in April. Unfortunately, we don't live close enough to have taken advantage of the deal, so we were hoping to purchase tickets through the SOG at the military rate.

I think (??) the fingerprint deal has to do with the annual passport ? I may be wrong.

I really think you should call up and ask them. Often, that is the only place you can get really reliable info. Also, it doesn't sound like you are staying on site. If so, I would guess you are hoping to purchase your tickets at the gate. If so, they certainly would know about discounts available to you. Call 'em.

Free admission

The free admission for military personnel did end, but it is extended for those who were out of the country on a mission, as long as they bring a copy of their orders. They can contact Shades of Green at (407) 939-7424 for details on the extension of the program for Operation Enduring Freedom members.

Hotel information and deals at the Contemporary can be found at www.shadesofgreen.org .

Normally that would be the case; however after 9/11, Disney announced an unprecedented (for Disney) program called the Armed Forces Salute. It was unprecedented because for the first time ever, an active military service person could get into both WDW and Disneyland resorts for free, as well as bring in their depends at extremely steep discounts.

tylersma97, you are right -- unfortunately, the program ended on April 30, 2002.

That said, you can always purchase a Stars & Stripes passport at your local MWR (Morale, Welfare, and Recreation) office on post or on base. Note that you cannot purchase these at the parks.

I believe you can also obtain information about SOG from MWR. I do recall that the local MWR office back had a SOG brochure listing all the rates based on your rank/grade.

And yup, the fingerprint checks are for annual passholders. The machine scans your fingerprint for specific features, and matches the biometrics to information stored in a database on a server on property somewhere. If I recall correctly, they don't do an exact fingerprint match, but just look at a couple of defined points/areas on your fingertip -- just enough to ensure that the machine can quickly match you to your record on file.

[My first post. Howdy! :) ]
