Setting yourself up for success in Imagineering

Imagineering is not any one single job. Disney promotes this idea of a very small, long term group that works on everything and that is not true. It is very much a place of specialists and project oriented work, meaning people come and go.

A handful of schools have recently started offering degrees in themed entertainment but they are still incredibly new. What you should consider studying is something that excites you and not think too much about Walt Disney Imagineering. What would make you happy if that was never an option. Not because it isn’t an option but because your way into the industry would be through your specialty and certain jobs may be done primarily elsewhere by vendors hired by Walt Disney Imagineering, as well as others like Universal.

The number one piece of advice they give aspiring themed entertainment professionals is that 1. You can't aim specifically for Imagineering and 2. Pick a specific discipline to focus on.

on the creative side some of the common disciplines would be Illustration, Architecture, Set Design, Writing, Entertainment Design, Theatre, Film, Industrial Design, Lighting Design, and Interior Design.

on the technical side you'd have film and stage technology, AV, computer engineering and programming, robotics, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering

there's also the sort of production side of things - so like being a scenic painter or the producing side of things: so like business and project management which can come from a specific degree or any of the above backgrounds.
